In the final stages of mixing, the goal shifts from processing individual tracks to unifying the entire session. Arturia’s Bus FORCE is a purpose-built mixing and mastering plugin designed to excel in this role, acting as an integrated, multi-stage processing suite for subgroups, stems, or the entire stereo master bus. It is a powerful conceptual tool, combining filtering, saturation, compression, and equalization into a single, cohesive channel strip that imparts professional weight and analog-style glue to any bus it touches.
A Three-Stage Sonic Architecture
Bus FORCE is structured around a flexible, three-module architecture that encourages a specific, effective workflow:
-
Filter/EQ: This initial stage focuses on spectral housekeeping. It features high-pass and low-pass filters to remove unwanted sub-lows or harsh highs, alongside a powerful 4-band Parametric EQ. This EQ is key for broad tonal shaping and is positioned before the saturation, allowing users to dial in the frequency content that will be pushed into the distortion stage for selective harmonic enhancement.
-
Saturation: This is the heart of the "FORCE" concept. Arturia includes four distinct saturation types—Warm, Tube, Transformer, and Magnetic—each offering a different flavor of harmonic distortion and compression. By driving the signal into this section, producers can introduce analog girth, glue, and subtle limiting, making the sound feel dense and cohesive. This stage is responsible for the crucial "mix glue."
-
Compressor: This VCA-style compressor is designed for transparent, controlled dynamic reduction. It features precise controls for Ratio, Attack, and Release, allowing the user to tighten up transients, increase sustain, and lock the rhythm of the bus into place. The compression here is often subtle, aimed at bringing out the low-level detail and creating a consistent, polished dynamic range.
Routing and Dynamic Control
Bus FORCE elevates its utility with highly flexible internal routing and dynamic capabilities. The order of the modules is not fixed; the user can freely drag and drop the Filter/EQ, Saturation, and Compressor blocks to change their processing order. For example, compressing before saturation will yield a smoother, more sustained tone, while saturating before compression will lead to a more aggressively colored and transient-heavy sound.
A defining feature is the Modulation Section, which takes Bus FORCE beyond traditional bus processing. It includes a powerful LFO and a versatile Function Generator that can be assigned to modulate almost any parameter. This allows for rhythmic filter sweeps, pumping saturation, or EQ movement synchronized to the tempo, turning a standard bus processor into a creative sound design tool for FX returns or parallel groups.
Arturia’s Bus FORCE is a dynamic control center that provides the complete signal chain needed to finalize a mix segment. By combining essential studio tools with flexible routing and dynamic modulation, it delivers the cohesive, powerful, and professional sonic weight of a high-end analog console, making it an indispensable tool for achieving a polished, cohesive final mix.
