Previous Versions
Audio Damage Ascent is not a nostalgic trip back to a specific vintage machine; instead, it is a focused, modern polyphonic synthesizer that embodies the best qualities of classic voltage-controlled analog hardware while leveraging the stability and routing power of a digital environment. Developed by Audio Damage, a company known for its expertly crafted, often gritty and characterful effects, Ascent delivers a sound that is rich, thick, and instantly evocative of high-quality, high-end poly-synths.
Dual Cores of Analog Simulation
At the core of Ascent are two independent, virtually analog oscillators. These are designed with sophisticated modeling that simulates the non-linearities and subtle drift characteristic of real analog circuitry. This attention to detail results in a sound that possesses the warmth and slight, organic pitch imperfections that add depth and width, preventing the typical "flatness" often associated with pure digital synthesis.
The oscillators offer a standard array of waveforms, including Saw, Square, Triangle, and Sine, but with the added versatility of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) for the square wave, and the ability to Hard Sync the oscillators for those classic, aggressive, ripping lead and bass tones. Furthermore, the Oscillator Mixer allows for the precise blending of the two voices, along with a noise source, feeding into the filter stage with varying levels of subtle, pre-filter saturation.
The Filter and Voice Architecture
Ascent employs a highly lauded Ladder Filter emulation. This is where the synthesizer truly gains its weight and personality. The filter offers 2-pole, 3-pole, and 4-pole configurations, each providing a distinct slope and resonance character. The crucial element is the filter's self-oscillation capability, which, particularly in the 4-pole mode, delivers that classic, creamy, and sometimes aggressive bite when pushed hard. The filter sounds thick at low resonance settings and screams musically when cranked, making it suitable for both gentle pads and razor-sharp leads.
The Voice Architecture is designed for modern playability, featuring up to 16 voices of polyphony and a robust Unison mode. The Unison can stack voices for massive, detuned sounds, crucial for contemporary EDM and Trance patches, while maintaining excellent CPU efficiency—a testament to Audio Damage’s streamlined code.
Modulation and Performance Tools
While the sound engine is analog-centric, the modulation routing is purely modern. Ascent features a simple yet effective set of modulation sources: two ADSR Envelopes (one dedicated to the VCA, one assignable) and two syncable LFOs. The LFOs are particularly flexible, with various waveforms and the ability to affect pitch, filter cutoff, and oscillator pulse width.
Finally, the built-in effects section provides crucial post-synthesis polish, including a chorus for stereo widening and a clean delay/reverb unit for adding space and atmosphere. By focusing on a lean, high-quality feature set that mirrors the structure of a classic poly-synth, Audio Damage Ascent provides a powerful and immediate sound design experience that consistently delivers thick, analog-flavored audio.
