Wavesfactory Re-Esser is a highly innovative and specialized dynamics processor that reframes the concept of de-essing—the removal of excessive sibilance (harsh "s" and "sh" sounds) from vocals. Unlike conventional de-essers that rely on fixed wideband compression or complex split-band configurations, Re-Esser uses a unique spectral detection and reconstruction algorithm to identify and selectively attenuate only the offensive high-frequency content, resulting in a vocal sound that is clear, natural, and free of distracting harshness.

Beyond Simple Compression

The fundamental limitation of traditional de-essers is that they often compress too broad a frequency range. When triggered by sibilance, they can inadvertently dull the overall brilliance and air of the vocal track, making the singer sound muffled or distant. Re-Esser avoids this pitfall through its specialized architecture:

• High-Resolution Spectral Detection: The plugin analyzes the incoming audio with extreme frequency resolution, accurately locating the precise, narrow-band frequencies where the sibilance energy resides.

The Two Modes of Operation

2. Wide Mode: This mode reverts to a more traditional, yet still highly effective, wideband compression triggered by the sibilant frequencies. While less transparent than Split Mode, Wide Mode can be useful for adding a subtle smoothing or limiting action to the entire high-frequency range, often favored for background vocals or instruments where a slight smoothing of the overall top end is desired.

The workflow of Re-Esser is enhanced by its clean, informative interface. A large visual display allows the user to see the exact frequency regions being targeted and attenuated in real-time. This provides the confidence needed to dial in aggressive settings without guessing the sonic consequences.

Crucially, Re-Esser includes powerful Mid/Side (M/S) processing capabilities. This allows the engineer to target sibilance in the Mid (mono) channel—where lead vocals typically reside—while leaving the side channels untouched, which is invaluable for preserving the width and ambience of the vocal track or mastering overall tracks.
