Abalon: Roguelike Tactics CCG (formerly Summoners Fate) is a fusion genre game that successfully blends the deck-building of a Collectible Card Game (CCG) with the strategic positioning of a turn-based tactical RPG, all wrapped in a roguelike structure inspired by classic tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

Tabletop Adventure and Exploration

The game casts the player as a chosen Summoner, embarking on a randomly generated quest across five distinct worlds, which are presented from a charming top-down, tabletop-board perspective. As the player explores, they encounter narrative events determined by a roll of a virtual D20 die, which can lead to new allies, powerful artifacts, shops, or challenging battles.

The atmosphere is a blend of high fantasy and whimsical humor, featuring unique characters like squirrel-hurling druids, psychic lizard wizards, and time-traveling rats. A successful run requires careful resource management and constant adaptation to the ever-changing adventure map.

Tactical Card Combat

Combat is where the game's hybrid mechanics truly shine. Encounters take place on a grid-based arena in a turn-based format. Players command their selected Summoner and a party of up to three recruited characters, using a hand of cards drawn from their personal deck.

The tactical depth is immense, as the outcome of a turn hinges on more than just card power:

• Positioning and Terrain: Moving units to gain flanking bonuses, utilizing environmental hazards (like spikes), and leveraging the map's features are crucial for victory.

• Synergies and Combos: Players must devise creative combos using their units and spells. For instance, mutating a summoned creature into a "Super Hulk Squirrel" and then breeding an army of them is a viable, if absurd, strategy.

• Deck Building: Summoners are tied to two out of five class types (Arcane, Celestial, Nature, Void, Chaos). The deck is capped at a lean 20 cards, encouraging highly focused, specialized builds that the player constructs on the fly from over 400 collectable cards and allies found during a run.

Roguelike Progression

True to the roguelike genre, defeat means starting a new run; however, persistent unlocks allow players to gain new Summoners (each with unique abilities), starting cards, and equipment, increasing strategic options for future attempts. Abalon offers a high level of replayability by constantly mixing procedural generation, diverse card pools, and a host of unlockable content, making every attempt to reach the final boss a fresh strategic puzzle.
