AK-xolotl is a fiercely charming and intensely challenging top-down, twin-stick roguelite shooter that swaps the usual human protagonist for an adorable, heavily armed axolotl. Developed by 2P Games, the game merges the frenetic combat of the shooter genre with the addictive progression and permadeath of a roguelite, all wrapped up in a pixel-art package teeming with cuteness and carnage.

Players take control of the titular axolotl commando, who, after a tragic event involving a stolen egg, sets out on a relentless quest for revenge through a series of randomly generated aquatic biomes. This quest requires the axolotl to blast its way through endless hordes of enemy creatures and fearsome bosses.

Shoot, Dodge, and Dash

The core gameplay centers on fluid, skill-based combat. As a twin-stick shooter, the player's left stick controls movement while the right stick controls firing direction, demanding high-level coordination. The combat is incredibly fast-paced, requiring split-second decisions to dodge incoming fire and navigate crowded screens.

A crucial mechanic is the dash ability, which grants temporary invincibility, allowing the axolotl to zip through bullet-hell scenarios. Mastering the timing and placement of the dash is vital for survival, as enemies often fill the screen with intricate bullet patterns, forcing the player to always be moving and dodging.

The Power of Loot and the Axolotl Arms Race

As a roguelite, AK-xolotl features a huge arsenal of randomized loot and power-ups to ensure every run feels unique. Players can find and equip over 50 different firearms, ranging from simple pistols and shotguns to bizarre, uniquely powerful weapons.

Furthermore, the axolotl can consume temporary power-ups and permanent upgrades that alter its abilities, such as increasing movement speed, adding elemental damage to bullets, or changing the dash maneuver. These choices form the build for that specific run.

The game also features a unique mechanic centered around the Axolotl's Pond:

  • Raising Axolittles: The player can recover stolen axolotl eggs and hatch them. These "Axolittles" can be raised and trained to gain permanent stat bonuses or even join the player as powerful companions in future runs.

  • The Kitchen: Players can harvest ingredients found in the dungeons and cook meals that provide significant temporary buffs for the next run, encouraging strategic resource management between bouts of frantic combat.

With its charming contradiction of cute amphibian and deadly commando, AK-xolotl delivers a compelling, brutal, and highly replayable roguelite experience.
