The term Arco is a fundamental directive in the world of classical and contemporary music, especially for players of string instruments like the violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Derived from the Italian word for "bow" or "arch," arco is used in musical scores to instruct the musician to produce sound with the bow, as opposed to plucking the strings with their fingers, a technique known as pizzicato.

The Technique and Its Importance

Arco playing involves drawing the bow—a stick of wood with horsehair stretched tightly across it—across the instrument's strings.
