Barony is a unique first-person dungeon crawler developed by Turning Wheel LLC. It successfully marries the classic, punishing mechanics of an old-school roguelike—such as permadeath, deep inventory management, and randomized environments—with the immersive perspective of a modern first-person game. The result is a challenging, retro-styled adventure often described as a hybrid of Minecraft and Nethack.

Gameplay: The First-Person Deep Dive

In Barony, the player is tasked with descending through the dungeon of the dreaded Baron Herx, aiming to defeat the lich and lift the curse he has placed upon the land. The game is known for its difficulty and unforgiving mechanics:

• Permadeath and Procedural Generation: Like any true roguelike, death is permanent. Each run takes place in a procedurally generated dungeon, ensuring that the layout, monster placement, and item locations are different every time, demanding constant adaptation from the player.

• Skill-Based Combat: Combat is action-oriented but driven by RPG statistics. Players must master timing attacks, blocking with shields, and utilizing magic. The first-person perspective makes aiming projectiles and maneuvering in tight corridors critical to survival.

• Deep RPG Mechanics: Barony features a robust system of RPG classes and skills. Classes range from the standard Warrior and Rogue to unique options like the Monk and the specialized Hunter. Every action, from swinging a sword to reading a spellbook, incrementally raises the corresponding skill (e.g., using a pickaxe increases the Mining skill).

Inventory, Hunger, and Curse Management

Survival requires far more than just fighting:

• Inventory and Identification: A core roguelike element is the identification of items. Potions, scrolls, and unidentified gear are often cursed or dangerous until the player risks using them or uses a specific scroll of identification. Players must be cautious, as picking up a Cursed Item can severely hinder a run.

• Hunger and Thirst: Unlike many modern games, Barony requires managing basic survival needs. The player must constantly find and consume food and water, adding a layer of logistical challenge to resource management.

• Traps and Secrets: The dungeons are littered with hidden traps that can end a run instantly. Finding and disarming these traps, along with discovering secret areas that often hide powerful loot, is essential for progression.

Focus on Co-op

A standout feature of Barony is its dedicated multiplayer co-op support for up to four players. The entire campaign can be played online or via local split-screen. This co-op mode elevates the gameplay, allowing players to combine different classes (e.g., a healer and a tank) and coordinate tactics against the formidable challenges. However, the game retains its difficulty; friendly fire is always on, and a coordinated failure can lead to a spectacular group wipe.
