Barotrauma is a terrifying 2D co-op submarine simulator that plunges players into the dark, crushing depths of Jupiter’s ice-covered moon, Europa. Set in a bleak sci-fi future, the game masterfully blends elements of survival horror, management simulation, and chaotic social deduction, earning it the moniker of "Subnautica meets Space Station 13."
The core experience revolves around the terrifying and often hilarious reality of operating a dilapidated submarine, the USS Dumpster Fire, with a crew of up to 16 players. Each player assumes a critical role—from the Captain and Engineer to the Mechanic, Doctor, and Security Officer—each with unique responsibilities essential for the submarine's survival and mission completion.
High-Pressure Environment and Crew Chaos
Life within the sub is one of constant, high-stakes crisis management. The game features an incredibly detailed and unforgiving physics engine, meaning a single hull breach can quickly lead to disaster. As water rushes in, compartments flood, pressure rises, and systems short-circuit, forcing the crew to frantically:
-
Repair Breaches: Weld holes shut before the sub is crushed by external pressure.
-
Fix Electrical Wiring: Diagnose and repair critical systems damaged by flooding.
-
Maintain the Reactor: Manage the nuclear reactor to prevent a meltdown that would destroy the entire vessel.
-
Treat Injuries: Deal with a variety of ailments, from radiation poisoning to deep-tissue wounds inflicted by monsters or careless crewmates.
The Monsters of Europa
The crushing depths are inhabited by grotesque and hostile alien lifeforms from the Europan abyss. These creatures—ranging from silent, hulking predators to fast, electric-discharging monstrosities—attack the sub relentlessly. Combat is a desperate affair, requiring the Security Officer and others to repel boarders and fend off attacks using an array of tools and weapons, including harpoons, sub-mounted coilguns, and the ever-present threat of simply being jettisoned into the freezing water.
Adding a layer of psychological tension is the optional Traitor Mode. Players can be randomly assigned secret, nefarious objectives that involve subtly sabotaging the mission, planting bombs, or murdering crew members, creating an atmosphere of deep paranoia and distrust that elevates the chaos and replayability.
Barotrauma is a demanding, exhilarating, and highly social survival experience that constantly tests teamwork, communication, and sanity against the immense pressure of the abyss.
