Beyond a Steel Sky is a 3D graphic adventure game developed by Revolution Software, the creators of the classic 1994 point-and-click adventure Beneath a Steel Sky. It acts as a direct sequel, bringing back the protagonist Robert Foster for a new, ambitious mystery in a fully rendered, modern adventure world.

The Story: Back to Union City

The game begins with Robert Foster living in the desolate, post-apocalyptic wasteland known as The Gap, far from the advanced megacities. His peaceful existence is shattered when a mysterious, highly advanced machine attacks his camp and kidnaps a young boy named Gerry.

Following the machine's trail, Robert finds himself drawn back to Union City, the futuristic, controlled metropolis he escaped over a decade ago. He manages to infiltrate the city by assuming the identity of a recently arrived citizen.

Union City is now a seemingly utopian society, ruled by the benevolent A.I., L.I.S.A. (Logic and Integration System Assistant), and designed around the principle of "Utopian Universalism"—everyone is supposedly happy, safe, and fulfilled. However, beneath the flawless facade, Robert quickly discovers a disturbing reality: the city's inhabitants are controlled by a subtle but pervasive system of social credits and psychological manipulation. No one seems to question the system, and everyone is under constant surveillance.

Robert's mission is twofold: rescue Gerry and uncover the truth about how Union City has evolved and who, or what, is truly running the show. He soon reconnects with his old robotic companion, Joey, whose presence is woven into the city’s operating system.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

• Modern Adventure Puzzles: While the game retains the spirit of classic point-and-click adventures, it uses a third-person, 3D environment. Puzzles involve exploring locations, collecting items, and engaging in extensive dialogue with the city's inhabitants.

• Hacking and Manipulation: The most crucial mechanic is the ability to "Hack" the environment using a small, specialized tool. Union City is built on a massive, interconnected network. By manipulating the logic nodes of electronic devices—swapping the functions of two separate machines (e.g., swapping the function of a coffee dispenser with an airlock's security scanner)—Robert can trigger chain reactions, bypass security, and manipulate the city’s citizens in clever, often humorous ways. This mechanic is central to solving many of the game's complex problems.

• Choice and Consequence: Many of Robert’s actions have lasting impacts on the small, isolated communities within the city, leading to different dialogue options and consequences later in the game.
