Blacksad: Under the Skin is a narrative adventure and detective game developed by Pendulo Studios and published by Microïds. Released in 2019, it is an adaptation of the acclaimed Spanish comic book series Blacksad by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, successfully translating the unique anthropomorphic film noir aesthetic into a fully 3D interactive experience.

 Plot: Corruption in the 1950s Underworld

The game is set in 1950s New York City, a period and location steeped in corruption and classic noir atmosphere. The protagonist is John Blacksad, a cynical, trench coat-clad private detective with the appearance of a black panther.

The central case begins when Blacksad is hired by Sonia Dunn, the daughter of boxing club owner Joe Dunn, who has been found dead in an apparent suicide. The mystery deepens when the gym's star boxer, Bobby Yale, mysteriously vanishes just before the biggest fight of his career. Blacksad's investigation into the disappearance and the suspicious death quickly plunges him into the seedy depths of New York's underworld, involving corrupt gambling syndicates, rival boxing promoters, and a dark scandal involving illegal pharmaceuticals.

The game's narrative focuses heavily on themes of social corruption, race (expressed through inter-species prejudice), and the moral ambiguities of the post-war era.

 Gameplay: Deduction and Feline Senses

Blacksad: Under the Skin blends traditional investigative gameplay with unique mechanics tailored to the feline detective:

• Investigation and Clue Gathering: Players navigate detailed 3D environments, examining hotspots to gather clues. The gameplay is reminiscent of narrative titles by Telltale Games and detective games like L.A. Noire.

• Deduction Mode: A key mechanic involves a "Deduction Mode" where the player must link collected clues and pieces of information on an in-game board to form logical conclusions, which then unlock new dialogue options or advance the plot.

• Feline Senses: Blacksad can use his cat-like senses to perceive things others miss. Activating this mode slows time and allows the player to focus on minute visual, auditory, and olfactory clues (such as a faint smell or a specific sound) that are crucial for solving puzzles or understanding a character's true intentions.

• Choice and Consequence: Throughout the game, dialogue trees present the player with timed, multiple-choice decisions that influence Blacksad's character traits (e.g., pragmatic vs. idealistic) and lead to one of the game's multiple endings.
