Cat Quest III (also known as Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean) is a charming action role-playing game (ARPG) developed by The Gentlebros and published by Kepler Interactive. Released on August 8, 2024, the game marks the third installment in the popular series, trading the land-based exploration of its predecessors for a vast, pirate-themed open-world sea adventure.

Setting Sail in the Purribean

The game plunges players into the Purribean, a fantastical, cat-centric archipelago swarming with feline enemies known as Pi-rats. Players take on the role of a swashbuckling "purrivateer"—the last of the ancient Seekers—who is on a quest to find the legendary, long-lost mythical treasure, the Northern Star. This adventure is not undertaken alone; the protagonist is joined by Captain Cappey, a trusty, ghostly spirit companion who acts as a guide and offers humorous commentary throughout the journey.

The storyline is light-hearted and packed with the series' signature, groan-inducing cat puns, maintaining a cheerful and accessible atmosphere. However, the overarching plot also contains deeper, cryptic references that tie into the lore of the previous Cat Quest games, setting the stage for future installments.

Dual Combat and Naval Warfare

While Cat Quest III retains the easy-to-grasp, fast-paced action-RPG combat of the previous entries, it introduces significant new mechanics:

• Ranged and Melee Flexibility: Combat is simplified but tight. Players can now seamlessly switch between melee weapons (swords, claws, daggers) and ranged weapons (pistols, rifles, magic wands). Mastering the dodge-roll and balancing melee attacks (to recharge mana) with magic spells or ranged gunplay is key to survival against the Pi-rat hordes.

• Ship Combat: The biggest addition is the ability to sail and fight in the open seas. Players commandeer their own pirate ship, engaging in exhilarating naval battles. Ship controls are simple, involving steering and using cannons. Players can upgrade their vessel with special ammo and perks—such as increased health, faster cannon reload, and specialty weapons—to tackle challenging enemy ships and mini-boss battles that roam the Purribean.

Exploration and Progression

The world is presented in a 2.5D open-world style, offering a sense of freedom. Exploration is balanced between traveling on foot to delve into dungeons and side-quests on the islands, and sailing the open waters for bounties and buried treasure.

Progression is tied to finding and leveling up equipment. Players collect gold and experience points (XP) to upgrade their favored weapons and armor, enhancing stats and battle prowess. The game features a variety of humorous and unique side quests that offer context, lore, and plenty of lighthearted dialogue, preventing the adventure from feeling like a repetitive grind.
