Chronos: Before the Ashes is an atmospheric action RPG developed by Gunfire Games and released in 2020. Functioning as a prequel to the hit title Remnant: From the Ashes, the game chronicles a hero’s lifelong quest to save their homeland from a great evil by venturing repeatedly into a mysterious and hostile labyrinth. It blends challenging, Souls-like combat with dungeon exploration and puzzle-solving, all centered around a singular, unique mechanic: aging.

The Labyrinth and the Quest

The narrative begins with a young protagonist who must enter an ancient, dimensional Labyrinth to confront the Dragon, the source of the demonic "Beasts" plaguing Earth. The Labyrinth is a dangerous test, and lore states it only opens once a year. When the hero dies, they are metaphorically cast out and must wait a year to return, which translates directly into the game's core progression loop.

The gameplay structure is built around interconnected worlds accessible via a central facility, blending third-person melee combat with classic adventure game elements. Players must solve environmental puzzles, find key items, and defeat powerful guardians to advance, offering a more puzzle-heavy experience than its Remnant sequel.

The Unique Aging Mechanic

The most distinguishing feature of Chronos is that every time the player dies, their character ages by one year. This mechanic is not just cosmetic; it fundamentally alters character progression and stat allocation:

• Youth (Ages 18-40): The character is primarily physically focused. Attributes like Strength (for heavy weapons/blocking) and Agility (for light weapons/dodging) are cheap and easy to upgrade. The hero is expected to rely on their physical prowess.

• Maturity and Wisdom (Ages 40+): As the character ages, physical attributes become increasingly expensive to upgrade, reflecting a natural physical decline. Conversely, the Arcana (magic/elemental) attribute becomes cheaper. This mechanic encourages players to shift their focus from raw power to magical counter-attacks and elemental damage as they grow older.

Furthermore, every time the character reaches a new decade (age 20, 30, 40, etc.), they unlock the choice of one of three permanent Traits, offering powerful bonuses that offset the increased cost of physical stats. This aging system ensures that even death contributes to character growth and forces players to constantly adapt their playstyle, embracing the wisdom that comes with repeated failure.

The combat itself is deliberate and challenging, relying on precise timing for dodges, blocks, and parries, followed by counter-attacks. While difficult, the inclusion of a three-tier difficulty setting (Casual, Adventure, and Heroic) makes the atmospheric world and compelling lore accessible to a wider audience.
