Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector - Crew, Crisis, and the Cosmos
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed dice-driven narrative RPG, developed by Jump Over the Age. Shifting the setting from a single space station to the expansive and lawless Starward Belt—a collection of habitats and wrecks within a volatile asteroid field—the game dramatically expands its scope, focusing on themes of crisis, community, and the persistent fight for personhood in a hyper-capitalist future.
Life and Luck in the Belt
Players once again inhabit the body of a Sleeper, an android housing a digitized human consciousness, now on the run from a corporate entity and a new gang boss, Laine, who retains a mysterious link to the protagonist. Having lost their memory during a desperate escape attempt, the Sleeper must start anew, choosing one of three classes—Operator, Extractor, or Machinist—each granting unique skill proficiencies and a powerful, class-specific "Push" ability.
The core gameplay loop remains centered on the cyclical use of dice. At the start of each Cycle (day), the Sleeper rolls a set of six-sided dice, which must be strategically allocated to various actions around their current location—from scavenging for fuel and supplies to interacting with characters or taking on dangerous jobs. Higher dice rolls lead to better success rates, but the stakes are higher than ever due to the revised survival mechanics.
Building a Crew and Navigating Crisis
The most significant addition is the introduction of a mobile base of operations, the ship known as The Rig, and the ability to recruit a Crew. Unlike the static setting of the first game, Starward Vector is a journey, requiring players to manage limited resources like fuel and supplies as they hop between distinct hub locations in the Belt. Crew members, each with their own story and unique two dice per cycle, can be brought on special, multi-cycle Contracts.
Contracts are self-contained missions to derelicts, asteroids, or enemy outposts. These jobs are tense, multi-step challenges that demand careful use of crew skills and introduce the new Stress system. Risky or failed actions can build Stress, which in turn can damage the Sleeper's dice pool, making it harder to succeed in subsequent rolls and potentially leading to permanent Glitches that skew the dice against the player. This stress-management mechanic enhances the game's theme of precarity, forcing players to weigh reward against the physical cost to their malfunctioning body.
Ultimately, Citizen Sleeper 2 is a compelling evolution, transforming the solitary struggle for survival into a cooperative fight for a future, all while delivering the same beautifully written, heartfelt, and philosophically deep sci-fi narrative the series is known for.
