Clustertruck is a chaotic and highly inventive first-person platform game developed by Landfall Games and released in 2016. Its premise is brilliantly absurd: the player must navigate a series of treacherous, obstacle-filled levels by jumping exclusively between the flatbeds of speeding, out-of-control semi-trailer trucks.

The Physics of Pandemonium

The entire game is a physics-based spectacle of destruction and movement. The core objective of each level is simple: get from the starting point to the finish line without touching anything but the trucks.

  • The Herd: The levels feature a massive convoy of trucks that, due to faulty AI and the environment, crash into each other, veer off cliffs, explode, and generally create a rapidly changing, dynamic, and unpredictable platforming surface. The AI is intentionally programmed to drive erratically, ensuring maximum mayhem.

  • Momentum and Speed: The trucks travel at high speed, meaning the player must constantly account for momentum and velocity. A mistimed jump or a quick stop can send the player flying uncontrollably off course or into a crushing collision.

  • The "Clustertruck" Effect: The game earns its name from the way the vehicles inevitably pile up into massive, tangled clusters of metal. These cluster zones require split-second decision-making to find a path through the carnage before the whole mess explodes or collapses.

Level Design and Progression

Clustertruck is organized into nine distinct worlds, each introducing unique environmental hazards and increasing the level of absurdity:

  • Environmental Hazards: Early worlds focus on basic obstacles like ramps and low bridges. Later worlds introduce extreme and often ridiculous elements like giant swinging hammers, laser grids, ice physics, flamethrowers, and even trucks that fly or have jet engines. These extreme elements constantly force the player to adapt their strategy and embrace the madness.

  • Difficulty Curve: The game features a steep but rewarding difficulty curve. While the first few worlds serve as an introduction, the later stages become pure trials of reflexes and pattern recognition, requiring dozens of attempts to master the precise movements needed to survive.

  • Editor and Custom Levels: The game includes a robust level editor, allowing the community to extend the game's lifespan infinitely by creating and sharing custom levels, often pushing the physics engine to even more ridiculous extremes.

Abilities and Score System

The game features a strategic layer through unlockable abilities and a dynamic scoring system:

  • Ability Unlocks: Players earn points based on their performance (speed, style, and success). These points can be spent to unlock and equip special abilities, which grant crucial tactical advantages:

    • The Double Jump: Essential for basic maneuverability.

    • The Truck Launch: Allows the player to push a truck downward for an extra boost.

    • The Grappling Hook: Provides a lifeline for quickly swinging onto distant trucks.

    • Slow Motion: Grants momentary reprieve to calculate complex jumps.

  • Style Scoring: The scoring system rewards players for dramatic and risky maneuvers, such as performing flips or narrowly avoiding obstacles, incentivizing players to push the boundaries of the physics engine for higher scores.

Clustertruck stands out as a pure, focused adrenaline rush, celebrated for its unique concept and chaotic execution.
