DEVOUR: Co-op Ritualistic Survival Horror
DEVOUR is a tense, co-operative survival horror game for 1-4 players, developed and published by Straight Back Games. It tasks a small group of cult members with stopping their possessed leader from raising the goat demon Azazel, requiring intense teamwork, resource management, and precise timing to survive the escalating demonic threat.
The core objective on each of the game's distinct maps is to perform a banishment ritual. This involves finding and sacrificing a specific number of ritual items—whether they are goats, rats, or spider eggs—at an altar or designated ritual location. The challenge lies in the fact that the possessed antagonist begins patrolling from the moment the session starts, and their rage and speed increase exponentially with every item successfully sacrificed.
Escalating Horror and Chase Mechanics
DEVOUR creates its signature sense of dread through the continuous, high-stakes escalation of difficulty:
-
The Antagonist: Each map features a unique possessed cult member (like Anna in The Farmhouse or Zara in The Inn) who acts as the main hunter. As more ritual items are sacrificed, their speed and aggression dramatically increase, transforming the game from a slow, methodical search into a frantic, near-constant chase.
-
UV Light Defense: The players' only primary defense is a UV flashlight. A quick blast of UV light can momentarily stun the main antagonist or instantly destroy the various lesser demons (fiends) they spawn. However, the UV light is a limited, recharging resource that becomes less effective against the main threat as the game progresses, demanding strategic use.
-
No Escape: If a player is caught, they are dragged away and downed, crawling helplessly until a teammate can revive them using a limited Medkit. If all players are simultaneously downed, the team fails and is dragged to hell. The high risk encourages coordinated distraction and calculated self-sacrifice.
High Replayability and Customization
The game is designed for high replay value, ensuring no two sessions are exactly the same:
-
Randomized Maps: Key elements on each themed map—such as the location of ritual items, keys, locked doors, and item spawns—are randomly generated in every playthrough, preventing players from memorizing exact routes.
-
Perk System: Players earn experience and Ritual Tokens by completing sessions. These tokens are spent to unlock permanent Perks (e.g., enhanced running speed, faster revives, better UV regeneration) that allow for character specialization and aid in tackling the game's higher difficulty modes, including Nightmare Mode, which removes the default UV flashlight altogether.
-
Positional Voice Chat: The use of in-game positional voice chat enhances the tension, turning whispers into essential communication and screams into frantic warnings, amplifying the cooperative horror experience.
With its relentless challenge, cooperative tension, and a variety of distinct maps (such as The Farmhouse, The Asylum, and The Inn), DEVOUR remains a popular choice for groups looking for a frightening and intense shared horror experience.
