Dungeon Clawler is a highly creative and unusual roguelite deckbuilder that mashes up the strategic depth of card games with the pure randomness and nostalgic thrill of an arcade Claw Machine (or Gacha Machine). Developed by the solo developer Yuan Works, the game casts the player as a simple adventurer whose path through the monster-filled dungeon is determined entirely by what they can grab from a giant, brightly lit claw machine.
The game is structured as a series of dungeon floors leading to a boss. At the start of each floor and after every encounter, the player faces a giant, screen-filling claw machine instead of a traditional shop or loot screen.
The Claw Machine Mechanic
The entire core gameplay loop revolves around the claw machine:
-
Claw Phase: The machine is filled with various tokens representing different resources, items, and power-ups:
-
Combat Cards: The cards that form your hand for the next fight.
-
Equipment: Temporary or permanent stat-boosting gear.
-
Currency: Gold, health, or valuable gems.
-
Negative Tokens: Tokens that might give you a curse or damage your health.
-
-
Selection: The player carefully guides the claw, attempting to grab the most desirable tokens.
-
Randomness: True to the arcade spirit, the claw's grip is randomized. Even if you aim perfectly, the claw might drop your target or accidentally grab a surrounding undesirable token, injecting a delightful layer of unpredictable chaos into every decision.
Combat and Deckbuilding
The resources grabbed from the claw machine immediately feed into the turn-based combat system.
-
Deck-to-Hand: The combat cards you grabbed are placed into your hand. You then face off against groups of dungeon monsters in a traditional turn-based combat screen.
-
Tactics: Combat requires players to spend Energy (also sometimes gained from the claw) to play attack, defense, and utility cards. The randomness of the claw requires players to be highly adaptive; one floor might give you a deck stacked with defense, forcing you into a drawn-out survival battle, while the next might give you a massive attack card, allowing for a quick, aggressive encounter.
Between floors, players can use collected Gems to upgrade the claw machine itself, improving its grip, increasing the number of grabs, or manipulating the tokens to increase the odds of grabbing valuable loot. This meta-progression allows players to slowly gain control over the chaotic nature of the machine.
Dungeon Clawler is a uniquely quirky, highly replayable roguelite that cleverly turns the frustrating randomness of arcade mechanics into its central, rewarding strategic element.
