Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers is a roguelike deck-building game that mashes up the fundamental rules of Blackjack with deep strategic customization and the chaotic atmosphere of a seedy, corrupted tavern. Developed by Purple Moss Collectors, the game puts the player on a run-based quest to battle their way through a casino floor by defeating a colorful cast of "degenerate gamblers."

Blackjack with a Twist

The core of the game is competitive, head-to-head Blackjack. Unlike traditional casino play where the player faces a dealer, here you face an opponent with their own health bar and strategy.

  • Damage System: Instead of betting money, the loser of each hand takes damage. The amount of damage dealt is tied to the difference in score: the winner deals damage equal to their score minus the loser's score (e.g., 21 vs. 15 deals 6 damage). Busting (going over 21) is especially punishing, often resulting in a score of zero, which maximizes the damage taken.

  • Strategy over Luck: The game introduces elements to mitigate Blackjack's inherent randomness. Players can peek at the cards remaining in their deck and gain "Advantage" chips, which allow them to play certain cards directly from their hand rather than relying on the next draw. Opponents are also programmed to stand at predictable scores, adding a layer of strategic planning.

Deckbuilding and Roguelite Progression

The run begins with the player choosing a starting deck defined by a primary suit, which grants a passive bonus when they hit Blackjack: Hearts (healing), Clubs (shields/damage reduction), Spades (extra damage), or Diamonds (currency).

As the player progresses through the casino's floors, they engage in a roguelite loop:

  • Deck Customization: After each victory, the player chooses new cards to add to their deck. These aren't just standard playing cards; the game features over 250 unique cards, ranging from Tarot cards and business cards to absurd novelty items. These cards introduce complex effects like instant Blackjacks, temporary bust-limit changes, card value manipulation, and self-healing.

  • Path Choices: Between battles, players choose paths that lead to shops (to buy new cards), rest areas (to heal), minigames (to earn chips), or further battles against increasingly challenging, bizarre opponents.

The blend of classic card game fundamentals with chaotic, over-the-top card effects and roguelite structure ensures that every run is a unique, high-stakes battle of wits, timing, and carefully managed risk.
