Evel Knievel (born Robert Craig Knievel Jr. in 1938) was an iconic American motorcycle daredevil and showman whose death-defying stunts made him an international cultural icon, particularly throughout the 1970s. Clad in his trademark patriotic, star-spangled white leather jumpsuits, Knievel was a master of spectacle, turning himself into a global brand that symbolized fearless ambition and American audacity.

The Rise to Fame

Knievel began his professional stunt career in 1965, initially performing smaller jumps over cars and animals at county fairs. He quickly escalated the danger to draw larger crowds. His breakthrough moment came on New Year's Eve, 1967, when he attempted to jump the Caesars Palace fountains in Las Vegas. Though he successfully cleared the 141-foot gap, he crashed violently upon landing, suffering a fractured skull, a crushed pelvis, and multiple broken bones, leaving him in a coma for a month. Crucially, the spectacular footage of the crash was televised on ABC's Wide World of Sports, instantly launching him to global fame.

Iconic, High-Risk Stunts

Knievel’s notoriety grew as he attempted increasingly perilous feats. He was known for making more than 300 jumps during his career, though he gained as much fame for his spectacular failures as his successes.

  • Wembley Stadium (1975): He attempted to jump 13 London double-decker buses in front of 90,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. He crashed on the landing ramp, breaking his pelvis and hand, but famously walked away to declare that he would never jump again (a promise he soon broke).

  • Snake River Canyon (1974): This was his most audacious attempt, a bid to jump the 1,600-foot-wide canyon in Idaho using the Skycycle X-2, a steam-powered rocket. The jump failed when the parachute deployed prematurely, but Knievel survived with only minor injuries.

  • Kings Island (1975): He achieved his longest successful jump by clearing 14 Greyhound buses at Kings Island, Ohio, a feat that drew record television ratings.

Knievel’s career was defined by injury; he claimed to have broken over 400 bones in his lifetime, a record that cemented his image as an unbreakable, resilient hero. He retired from major jumps in 1977.

Legacy

Evel Knievel's fearless personality and anti-drug messages influenced an entire generation of children and extreme sports athletes. His merchandise, especially the popular Ideal Stunt Cycle action figure, was a major commercial success. Knievel's jump setups and iconic Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycle are preserved in the Smithsonian Institution, marking him as a true American showman whose quest to defy gravity transcended mere sport to become a significant piece of pop culture history.
