FACEMINER is an experimental, narrative-driven management simulation game developed by Wristwork and released in February 2025. It uniquely blends the highly addictive gameplay loop of an incremental "clicker" with a chilling dystopian thriller narrative, all presented within the stark, grey, and nostalgic confines of a vintage, 1999-era operating system. The game tasks the player with building a planetary-scale biometric data processing empire from the ground up, forcing them to confront the ethical vacuum of corporate surveillance.

Core Loop: Click, Automate, and Conquer

The player starts as a low-level "data-filtering rookie" working within the confines of the FACEMINER software suite. The initial task involves manually purchasing and then classifying dubious datasets of human faces (mugshots, social media profiles, criminal records) by clicking on the clearest images to assign 'purity scores.' This repetitive, hypnotic action is the foundation of the incremental loop.

As players accumulate credits and advance through the ranks, the game transitions into a complex management sim:

• Infrastructure Management: Players invest profits back into their hardware. This includes upgrading RAM, increasing processing power, managing high-maintenance cooling systems to prevent server meltdowns, and juggling mounting electricity bills.

• Automation: The goal quickly shifts from manual clicking to automation. Players unlock and upgrade software that auto-classifies data, allowing the operation to scale exponentially—moving from harvesting thousands of faces to billions.

• Ethical Trade-offs: The management decisions carry dark weight. Players must navigate morally ambiguous choices, such as whether to prioritize profits and scalability or invest in costly, "crooked" carbon offsetting schemes to manage the ecological impact of their increasingly massive data centers.

Narrative and Atmosphere

The game masterfully uses its retro presentation to create an unsettling atmosphere. The entire experience unfolds on a simulated Win95-style desktop, complete with authentic window interfaces. The primary source of the narrative is the dynamic internal messaging system.

Over 200 in-game messages pop up in the inbox, providing more than just corporate gossip. These messages slowly unravel a mystery: revealing the true, shadowy creators of the FACEMINER software, detailing the global consequences of the A.I. surveillance being built, and adding human flavor through the existential dread of fellow, overworked employees.

Accompanied by an original, period-authentic soundtrack featuring '90s-infused tracks (from jungle to ambient techno), FACEMINER is a successful critique of techno-optimism and surveillance capitalism, trapping the player in a horrifyingly addictive feedback loop where every click leads to greater power, but at a catastrophic human and environmental cost.
