Firmament: Cyan Worlds' Steampunk Puzzle Odyssey

Firmament is a first-person narrative and puzzle adventure game developed by Cyan Worlds, the legendary studio behind the genre-defining classics Myst and Riven. Released in May 2023 following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Firmament transports players into a beautiful, solitary world steeped in steampunk and Sci-Fi aesthetics, built for both traditional PC play and full VR immersion.

Narrative and The Three Realms

The story begins as the player awakens in a mysterious, abandoned bunker, known as Curievale. They are immediately greeted by a mysterious apparition—referred to as the Mentor—who is voiced by a late resident of this strange world. This Mentor tasks the player with a vital, immediate mission: to activate the central systems and complete a complex process known as "The Embrace."

The world of Firmament consists of a central hub (The Swan) and three sprawling, interconnected realms, each with a distinct biome and purpose:

  • Curievale: An ice-laden mountainous region housing a massive industrial ice factory.

  • St. Andrew's: A mountainous, forested area containing extensive botanical gardens and greenhouses.

  • Juleston: A coastal lagoon zone where massive battery docks float in acidic pools.

The overall mystery is fueled by discovering the purpose of these seemingly abandoned worlds and the ancient, massive steampunk machinery scattered across the landscapes. As the player explores, they piece together journals and lore that hint at a much grander, darker truth: the world they inhabit is actually a centuries-old generation starship called the Atelis, and the Keepers (the residents) were unknowingly maintaining its systems.

The Adjunct and Environmental Puzzles

Firmament maintains the core Cyan tradition of environmental puzzle-solving but introduces a unique mechanical tool to interact with the world:

  • The Adjunct: The player carries a wrist-mounted, steampunk automaton called the Adjunct. Almost all puzzle interaction is handled through this device. The Adjunct can fire a tethered connection to specialized "Sockets" found on doors, platforms, trams, and complex machinery.

  • Interaction Puzzles: Once connected, the Adjunct provides an interface for performing various actions—from opening simple doors to coupling and uncoupling train cars, and raising and rotating massive platforms to bridge gaps. This mechanic often turns puzzles into exercises in spatial awareness and logic, requiring players to manipulate elements from afar without always having a direct line of sight.

The challenge of Firmament lies in deciphering the logic of these vast, decaying machines and utilizing the Adjunct correctly to complete the final procedure and reveal the full, complex history of the Atelis and its inhabitants.
