FREERIDE

FREERIDE is an off-beat, narrative-driven Role-Playing Game (RPG) developed by Flightyfelon Games Inc. and published by Future Friends Games. Launched on PC (Steam) and Mac on May 1, 2025, with a later release for Nintendo Switch, the game distinguishes itself by being a highly branching adventure that secretly doubles as a Personality Test.

Boarding the Fate Train

The game instantly throws the player, known as "Proto," into a bizarre and surreal world. The story begins with the player unexpectedly boarding a Fate Train headed for the Spirit World. Here, they meet a colorful, troubled cast of spirits and creatures, each dealing with their own "Unfinished Business." The primary goal of the game is to help these characters navigate their personal conflicts and repair broken relationships, often with the guidance of the mysterious and sassy figure known as The Seer.

The overall narrative is complex and deeply reactive, designed to force multiple playthroughs. The developers estimate that a single 4–6 hour run will only reveal about one-third of the total story content, encouraging players to re-embark on the Fate Train to explore different routes and endings.

Telekinesis and Unconscious Choices

A key gameplay mechanic is the use of physics-based telekinesis, a power gifted to the player. This ability allows the player to grab, move, and throw objects in the environment. This power is used not only for solving various environmental puzzles (like manipulating furniture or catching items) but also for the occasional, awkward, object-chucking combat encounters against demons.

The most unique aspect of FREERIDE is how the game observes the player. It is a constant, subtle personality test where the player's choices—both conscious dialogue decisions and unconscious actions (like which objects they interact with or which areas they prioritize exploring)—are secretly tallied. These actions ultimately determine a "Personality Outcome" at the end of each act. The game is highly non-judgmental, focusing on consequence rather than a traditional "good" or "evil" alignment.

Art Style and Experience

FREERIDE features a distinct, colorful, and often whimsical art style that contrasts with the heavier themes of death, despair, and self-discovery. The world is imaginative, with bright, stylized characters and unique environments (like rainbow roads that defy gravity).

While the narrative depth and creativity are praised, some reviewers noted that the game’s controls for the telekinesis and camera angles can feel clunky or unintuitive, occasionally making simple interactions difficult. Nonetheless, FREERIDE stands out as a charming, introspective RPG that challenges the player to be true to themselves, whether they realize they're being tested or not.
