Gearbits is a fast-paced, third-person mecha action-shooter developed by Quackpond Games. Released in 2023, the game has been highly praised as a successful independent effort that captures the spirit of classic, high-mobility giant robot games like the early Armored Core and Gundam series, blending that mechanical depth with the swarm combat intensity of games like Earth Defense Force.

Core Gameplay: Thrusters and Twin-Stick Combat

The defining feature of Gearbits is its focus on aerial mobility and high-octane speed. The player pilots a giant robot, or "Gearbit," equipped with powerful rocket thrusters. Movement is split between traditional ground running and boost-jumping and flying, allowing players to quickly traverse the battlefield and rain fire down on enemies from above.

However, mobility is constantly tempered by the overheating mechanic. Excessive use of the rocket thrusters will overheat the machine, forcing the player to land and cool down, making them vulnerable. This creates a challenging risk-reward loop where players must manage their heat output, momentum, and positioning to maintain constant pressure on the enemy without becoming a sitting duck.

Combat is a mix of tactical engagement against rival pilots and mass destruction against hordes of creatures:

• Swarm Destruction: Many missions involve fighting massive waves of vicious, giant insects. This chaotic, arcade-like element necessitates wide-area weapons and constant aerial dodging.

• Pilot Duels: The game also features intense duels against enemy Gearbits, requiring precise aiming, energy management, and knowledge of the enemy's attack patterns.

Gearbits offers deep customization, providing players with the tools to adapt their machine to their preferred playstyle:

• Unlockable Robots: The game features 10 unique Gearbits to unlock and pilot. Each machine has distinct base stats, focusing on different archetypes, such as superior firepower, heavy armor, or high maneuverability.

• Massive Arsenal: Over 30 unique weapons are available, including missile launchers, rail guns, beam cannons, and melee options. The player can mix and match these weapons, allowing for the creation of game-breaking "winning combos" or highly specialized loadouts for challenge runs. The challenge lies in building a synergistic loadout that works well with the chosen Gearbit's strengths and weaknesses.

Game Modes

The main experience is driven by a 20-mission story campaign set in a distant colony world in the far future, where the player attempts to complete various objectives amid the insect swarms and enemy pilots. Additionally, the game includes a Wave Survival Mode, where players face escalating hordes of enemies, earning credits to spend on weapons and equipment to survive the next round, adding substantial replayability.
