Hellpoint is a dark sci-fi action RPG developed by Cradle Games, which proudly embraces the challenging and cryptic mechanics of the "Souls-like" genre. The game is set on Irid Novo, a massive, derelict space station orbiting a super-massive black hole. The station has been devastated by a massive "quantic cataclysm" that merged realities and attracted malevolent cosmic entities.

Setting and Plot: The Spawn of Authority

The player awakens as the Spawn, a mysterious cloned being created by the station's A.I., known only as The Author. The Spawn's nebulous task is to investigate the catastrophe, gather data, and uncover the deep, twisted secrets of the station's experiments, which centered on accessing alternate realities and achieving ultimate consciousness.

The atmosphere is one of claustrophobic, cosmic horror. Irid Novo is a vast, non-linear labyrinth of interconnected zones, filled with grotesque, biomechanical monstrosities, remnants of twisted human experiments, and aggressive robotic defense systems. Like its inspiration, Hellpoint's lore is delivered piecemeal through item descriptions and fragmented computer logs, leaving the player to piece together the grim narrative of the station's fall.

Core Mechanics: A Familiar but Unique Soulslike

Hellpoint follows the classic Soulslike formula: challenging third-person combat focused on stamina management, limited healing, and the use of a currency (Axioms) for leveling up at checkpoints called Breaches. However, it introduces several key differentiators:

  • The Black Hole Orbital System: This is Hellpoint's most unique feature. The station's orbit around the black hole is represented by an in-game clock. At specific times, the gravitational and cosmic alignment changes, leading to an Accretion Storm. During this event, enemies grow stronger, drop better loot, and Horde events (challenging timed battles) become available in certain areas. This dynamic system forces players to adapt their exploration schedule based on cosmic events.

  • Healing System: Unlike Dark Souls, healing charges (Medical Injections) are not restored at a Breach. Instead, they are refilled by hitting enemies in melee combat (called the Leech mechanic), forcing a more aggressive and proactive playstyle.

  • Death Mechanic: When the player dies, a ghost of their character—equipped with their gear—spawns near the corpse to actively fight them, adding a direct, hostile element to the act of retrieving lost Axioms.

The game also features a dedicated cooperative mode for the entire campaign and multiple endings tied to the player's choices regarding The Author and the station's ultimate fate, offering high replayability for those who can survive its brutal difficulty.
