Originally released in two "Books" in 2017, the complete story, encompassing all four books, was fully released as Herald: Complete Edition on May 1, 2025. The game transports players to an alternate-history 19th century, using the microcosm of a ship voyage to explore complex themes of colonialism, class, and identity.

Setting the Stage: The Protectorate

The game is set in an alternate 1857, where the West has united into a single, colonial superpower known as The Protectorate. This superpower, while claiming moral superiority, rules over its "Eastern Colonies" with an iron fist, creating deep racial and social tensions that are on the verge of revolt.

The story is told through a framing narrative: the protagonist, Devan Rensburg, a man of mixed heritage, recounts his pivotal voyage aboard the HLV Herald, a grand merchant clipper bound for his country of birth, to a mysterious woman known only as "The Rani."

The Steward’s Dilemma

Players take on the role of Devan, working as a steward aboard the Herald. Devan is conflicted: born in the Colonies but adopted and raised in the West, he is traveling back to reconnect with his roots, but struggles to find his place in a world deeply divided by race and class.

The core gameplay is a blend of point-and-click adventure and visual novel, revolving almost entirely around:

• Choice-Driven Dialogue: Most interactions involve dialogue choices where the player decides how Devan behaves. Do you choose to be subservient to the wealthy and powerful passengers (like the influential politician Louis Morton) for security, or do you stand up for the downtrodden crew members and express subtle acts of rebellion?

• Consequence and Reputation: Every dialogue choice and small action (even something as minor as fetching a lost item or delivering a message) contributes to Devan's standing with the different social classes aboard the ship. These shifting relationships drastically alter the branching narrative, determining who helps or hinders him as the ship's dark secrets and a global conspiracy begin to unravel.

Atmosphere and Themes

The HLV Herald is a floating metaphor for 19th-century society, filled with a diverse cast of fully voiced characters—from sly aristocrats to overworked sailors—each with their own secrets and motivations.

The game is praised for its vivid, hand-painted art style, which uses detailed, animated 2D character portraits set against visually rich 3D environments.
