Keep Driving, developed and published by YCJY Games, is an atmospheric management RPG and adventure game that perfectly captures the unique freedom and anxiety of a long-haul road trip in the early 2000s. Released on Windows on February 6, 2025, the game blends resource management, roguelike elements, and a choice-driven narrative into a cohesive and charming experience.

The Journey and the Goal

The game's premise is simple: the unnamed protagonist, having just acquired their first beat-up car, decides to drive across the country to attend a music festival, guided only by a map and a sense of youthful freedom. The journey is the story, and the player begins by selecting a character background (like part-time mechanic or student), which grants initial skills and traits that influence the entire run. The game's world is a procedurally generated pixel-art open world, ensuring that each road trip offers a new sequence of challenges and encounters.

Core Gameplay: Turn-Based Road Challenges

Despite being a "driving" game, Keep Driving features no actual driving gameplay. Instead, the core interaction is a unique, turn-based "combat" system used to overcome road events and obstacles. As the car cruises between destinations, the player encounters a handful of threats—potholes, traffic jams, biker gangs, or mechanical breakdowns—that directly attack four core resources:

• Gasoline: The fuel level in the tank.

• Durability: The health of the car.

• Cash: Money for gas and repairs.

• Energy: The protagonist's personal stamina.

To dispel these threats, the player uses a system reminiscent of a deckbuilder or a simplified RPG: they must match colored icons representing the threats with the icons on their Skill Cards (gained through experience and background) or Items (found or bought in the glovebox). Managing the limited uses of these skills and items is critical, as failing to eliminate threats results in resource damage, which can lead to running out of gas, breaking down, or becoming too exhausted to continue.

Management, Misfits, and Music

Success on the road requires meticulous resource management in the various towns and locations the player stops at. Players must visit gas stations, buy necessary supplies (like duct tape for repairs or coffee for energy), and search for employment offices to take on odd jobs to earn money. They can also sleep to replenish energy and skill uses, and upgrade their car in garages.

A major narrative element is picking up hitchhikers—a diverse cast of misfits, oddballs, and lost souls. Each hitchhiker adds a unique skill card to the dashboard and introduces a personal story or side quest, adding new depth and risk to the journey. While they can be helpful, some also consume resources or introduce negative effects.

The game's nostalgic, early 2000s atmosphere is further enhanced by its beautiful pixel art and its celebrated soundtrack, which features a collection of original music by Swedish indie rock bands like Westkust, perfectly setting the mood for a carefree summer of self-discovery and freedom on the open road.
