Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a three-episode episodic graphic adventure game developed by Deck Nine Games. Serving as a prequel to the original Life is Strange, the game is set three years earlier and focuses entirely on the life of Chloe Price—the rebellious teenager who is still reeling from the death of her father, William, and the sudden departure of her best friend, Max Caulfield.

The Narrative: Chloe and Rachel

The game opens with a 16-year-old Chloe attempting to sneak into an abandoned mill hosting a clandestine concert. Her recklessness leads to an altercation with two thugs, a situation resolved unexpectedly when she is defended by Rachel Amber, the beautiful, popular, and seemingly perfect student at Blackwell Academy.

This chance meeting ignites an immediate and intense connection between the two girls. The central narrative is devoted to chronicling the formation of their profound and transformative friendship, which quickly evolves into a shared escape from the mundane and painful realities of Arcadia Bay. Chloe sees a spark of wildness in Rachel, and Rachel sees loyalty and boldness in Chloe’s rebellion.

Gameplay: The "Backtalk" Mechanic

Since Chloe does not possess the time-rewinding power Max has, Before the Storm introduces the "Backtalk" mechanic as Chloe's unique ability. This is a risk-reward dialogue system that reflects Chloe's sharp wit and impulsiveness:

  • During key confrontations, the player enters a timed challenge where they must select aggressive, witty, and logically sound responses that match the opponent's tone.

  • Successfully using Backtalk allows Chloe to intimidate, persuade, or manipulate others to resolve conflicts or gain access to areas/information. However, failure can escalate the situation, often leading to worse outcomes.

The Lies of Arcadia Bay

As the friendship develops, Chloe and Rachel discover a secret that shatters Rachel's seemingly perfect life. While skipping school and exploring, they witness a heated, intimate argument between Rachel’s father, James Amber (the well-respected District Attorney), and a mysterious woman.

The discovery of James Amber’s affair drives Rachel to a fit of rage, leading her to start a massive forest fire with the wreckage of a burned boat—a symbolic act of lashing out at the town's hypocrisy.

The ensuing investigation by Chloe forces her to uncover a much deeper, darker truth: the woman James Amber is secretly seeing is not just his mistress, but Sera, Rachel’s biological mother. James had deliberately hidden Sera's identity due to her severe drug addiction and involvement with dangerous local criminals, believing he was protecting Rachel. The climax of the game involves Chloe and Rachel risking everything to save Sera from a drug dealer, revealing the corruption simmering beneath Arcadia Bay's surface.

A Poignant Conclusion

Before the Storm is praised for its powerful, character-driven story and its raw emotional portrayal of grief, rage, and finding connection in troubled times. The game ends on a bittersweet note, highlighting the tragic trajectory of Chloe and Rachel's relationship as the final scene directly sets up the events and mysteries of the original Life is Strange.
