The Call of the Voice

Misfortune lives in a small, dreary town called Opporkun. Her life is overshadowed by the implied poverty, sadness, and neglect of her dysfunctional parents. The story begins when Misfortune is approached by a mysterious, disembodied voice in her head, which she names Mr. Voice.

Mr. Voice acts as a cynical, sometimes manipulative narrator, guiding Misfortune on a peculiar quest. He promises her a prize—Eternal Happiness—if she completes a simple task: following his instructions and venturing outside her home to find a Golden Glitter. Misfortune, whose boundless optimism contrasts sharply with her bleak reality, eagerly accepts the quest.

The Journey for Eternal Happiness

The gameplay involves guiding Misfortune through a series of locations in Opporkun, characterized by a unique, highly stylized cartoon-gothic art style. The interaction is primarily based on choices that influence Misfortune's perception of the world and her eventual fate.

A central mechanic is the concept of "Shinies"—Misfortune’s habit of collecting random, sparkly objects (like glitter or rocks) and offering them as gifts to those she meets. These small acts of kindness highlight her innocence and her desperate need to share happiness, even in grim circumstances.

Throughout her journey, Misfortune encounters various creatures and figures, often tied to her town's dark underbelly or supernatural elements, including glimpses of the menacing, shadow-like entity known as the Shadow Beast. She also develops a peculiar friendship with Benjamin, a large, silent fox whom only she can see.

The Dark Themes and Ending

Despite the game's charming, childlike façade and Misfortune's frequent cries of "Yay!" whenever she makes a decision, the story deals with mature and disturbing themes: parental abuse, death, mental health, and the loss of innocence. The lighthearted exterior slowly peels back to reveal a tragic core.

The narrative reveals that Misfortune is not simply on a quest for glitter; she is, in fact, dead from the very beginning. Her journey is a liminal experience—a passage through the afterlife guided by the manipulative Mr. Voice (who is implied to be a demonic or malevolent force) and protected by Benjamin (who represents a spirit guide or protector).
