Previous Versions
Manifold Garden, released in 2019 by William Chyr Studio, is a mind-bending first-person puzzle game that transcends conventional notions of space and gravity. Inspired heavily by the impossible geometry of M.C. Escher's artwork and the concepts of manifold geometry, the game offers a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating experience set in an infinitely repeating, architectural dreamscape.
The Logic of Perpetual Space
The core mechanic of Manifold Garden is the player’s ability to change the direction of gravity. The world is divided into surfaces of six distinct colors, and by approaching a surface and pressing a button, the player can instantly designate that surface as the new "floor." This shifts the entire environment's gravitational pull, allowing walls to become floors and ceilings to become walls, opening up new pathways and fundamentally altering the perception of the environment.
This mechanic enables the game's signature feature: infinite repetition. If the player walks off a ledge, they do not fall to their death; instead, they fall until they reappear from the corresponding edge of the structure below, mimicking the endlessly repeating patterns seen in Escher's famous lithographs like Relativity. Likewise, looking out into the distance reveals the same architectural arrangement repeating into infinity, creating a stunning sense of scale and recursive design.
Color-Coded Puzzles
The puzzles in Manifold Garden revolve around manipulating gravity to transport colored blocks to similarly colored pedestals. A block will only adhere to a surface and respond to gravity that matches its color. For example, a blue block can only be pushed and placed when the player has aligned their gravity with a blue surface. This introduces a layer of complexity: not only must the player figure out how to move the block, but they must also determine the precise sequence of gravity flips necessary to make the block's journey possible across a chaotic, multi-colored landscape.
As the game progresses, it introduces more sophisticated puzzle elements:
-
Water Flow: Manipulating colored water to power machinery or create temporary platforms.
-
Laser Gates: Using block placement to reflect beams or block force fields.
-
Environmental Manipulation: Restoring "life" and vibrant colors to the barren world by completing major puzzles.
Atmosphere and Artistry
Manifold Garden is a minimalist masterpiece in its presentation. The environment is dominated by clean, white, Brutalist architecture, sharply contrasted by the vibrant, single-color blocks and surfaces. The ambient, generative soundtrack responds subtly to the player's movements and changes in gravity, reinforcing the surreal, meditative atmosphere. The game is less about quick reflexes and more about pausing, observing the impossible structure from every angle, and visualizing how a change in gravity will re-map the entire world.
The game is a compelling fusion of art and mathematics, transforming complex geometric principles into an accessible and breathtaking interactive experience, proving that simple mechanics can yield profound complexity.
Rediscover gravity and explore a world of impossible architecture in the style of M.C. Escher. Experience infinity firsthand and learn its rules to solve challenging puzzles based on the laws of physics.
Bring the garden to life to discover new paths to boundless spaces. Explore stunning architectural structures inspired by the works of M.C. Escher. In this world, different laws of physics apply. The geometry repeats endlessly in all directions, and if you fall, you return to your starting point.
Manipulate gravity to change your perspective and see the world from new angles. Learn the rules of this universe and fill the desolate world with vegetation and life. In November 2012, William Tschir began work on Manifold Garden. The game was originally called Relativity and was inspired by a lithograph by M.C. Escher depicting a world with multiple gravity directions.
