Maze Mice is a charming and frantic competitive party game developed by indie studio Cheese Trap Games. Designed for 2 to 4 players, the game combines elements of tile-laying, real-time strategy, and physical dexterity, making it a favorite for casual game nights. The objective is simple: be the first mouse to collect five wedges of cheese and return them to your home base, all while navigating a constantly shifting maze.

Gameplay Overview: Building the Gauntlet

The core mechanic of Maze Mice revolves around the dynamic game board. The board starts as a small central area, but players are constantly adding to and manipulating it.

  1. Tiles: The game uses a large deck of double-sided, square tiles. Each tile features various maze paths, dead ends, and special icons (like trap spaces or shortcuts).

  2. Mice Movers: Each player controls a unique, colored mouse mover that is physically large enough to sit on the tiles.

  3. Cheese Wedges: Small, distinct tokens placed randomly on the game board at the start and when certain tiles are played.

How to Play: Real-Time Mayhem

The game is played in real time, with no defined turns, leading to a high-energy, chaotic environment:

  • Move & Place: On your turn, you draw one tile and must immediately place it adjacent to any existing tile on the board. The strategic placement of this tile is crucial; you want to extend your path toward the cheese while simultaneously blocking your opponents or leading them into traps.

  • Move Your Mouse: Once a tile is placed, you can move your mouse along the open path segments on the tiles connected to the new piece. Movement speed is limited only by how quickly and carefully you can trace the path.

  • Collect and Return: When your mouse reaches a cheese wedge icon, you instantly collect it. However, your mouse can only carry one wedge at a time. After collecting cheese, you must race back to your designated, color-coded starting tile (the "Home Base") to deposit the cheese.

Traps and Dexterity

The real difficulty and fun come from the game's traps and dexterity challenge. Some tiles contain Trap Icons (like mouse traps or owls). If your mouse moves onto a trap icon, you must stop immediately and perform a small, dexterity-based mini-game (e.g., balancing a dice on your fingertip for five seconds) before you can move again. This brief pause gives opponents time to block your path or steal the last cheese.

Furthermore, since the board is always changing, players must have excellent spatial awareness. A path that was open one second can be instantly cut off by an opponent's tile placement, forcing you to backtrack through the increasingly complicated labyrinth. The winner is the first player to successfully deposit their fifth cheese wedge at their Home Base. Maze Mice is a loud, competitive, and uniquely satisfying game that rewards quick thinking and playful sabotage.
