The call came in at 03:00, jolting Officer Kaelen from a thin sleep. It wasn't the usual domestic disturbance or convenience store robbery; it was a Category Five Cryptid Event—the highest threat level, reserved only for things that defy physics and common sense.
The target: the Bonk Zone, a six-block radius of downtown Chicago known for its high density of tech companies and inexplicable structural damage. And the perpetrator: Megabonk.
Megabonk is a creature of urban legend, a massive, muscular entity resembling a hyper-evolved gorilla with skin the color of polished steel and eyes that glowed with electric blue intensity. Its defining characteristic, and the source of its moniker, was its terrifying, concussive attack: a single, earth-shattering overhead smash delivered by its colossal fists.
Kaelen arrived with her partner, Rico, their cruiser bouncing over cracked pavement near the financial district. The scene was pure devastation. A newly constructed skyscraper, the pride of the city, now had a massive, perfectly concave indentation spanning fifty stories. It looked like a giant had struck it with a colossal mallet.
“Dispatch said he’s heading toward the Loop,” Rico muttered, nervously checking his custom-issue sonic rifle. “We’re supposed to contain, not engage.”
“Contain a hundred-foot metal ape with seismic fists?” Kaelen adjusted her helmet. “Right.”
They found Megabonk standing triumphant in the middle of a major intersection, tossing a shredded bus like a rubber toy. The creature let out a deafening roar, a sound so low it vibrated through Kaelen’s internal organs.
Suddenly, Megabonk fixed its glowing blue gaze on the two officers. It lumbered toward them, each footfall creating a small, localized tremor.
Kaelen knew they couldn't run. The only chance they had was to exploit the creature’s singular, destructive focus.
“Rico, target its right eye. Distraction only!” she ordered.
She revved the engine of the police cruiser and swerved into a nearby alley. Megabonk ignored Rico’s ineffective sonic blasts. It was preparing the Megabonk—the world-ending smash.
The creature’s arms rose, casting a massive, black shadow over the entire alley. The air grew heavy, and Kaelen could hear the structural supports of the adjacent buildings groan under the psychic pressure of the impending impact.
Kaelen slammed the cruiser into reverse, flooring the pedal. The cruiser shot backward just as Megabonk brought its enormous fists down.
The sound was a single, instantaneous BOOM, followed by the terrifying noise of structural collapse. The impact didn't just smash the pavement; it created a perfect, thirty-foot-deep crater.
Kaelen, shaken but alive, realized the crucial tactical error the cryptid always made: Megabonk was committed to the attack’s epicenter.
The creature, momentarily stunned by its own seismic output, was now trapped at the bottom of the crater. Kaelen and Rico used the opportunity to deploy the newly developed Cryo-Net, an industrial-strength web designed to freeze cryptids on contact.
They managed to cover the immobilized monster, buying the city a temporary, fragile peace. As dawn broke, casting orange light over the devastation, Kaelen looked at the skyscraper with the giant dent and muttered, “We’re going to need a lot of duct tape for this city.”
