Myst III: Exile is the third installment in the groundbreaking Myst adventure game series. Developed by Presto Studios (taking over from Cyan Worlds) and published by Ubi Soft, it was released in 2001. The game marked a significant transition for the series, moving from the pre-rendered, static images of the first two games to a fully immersive, 360-degree interactive environment using QuickTime VR technology.

The Story and Setting

The game begins ten years after the events of Riven. The player once again takes the role of the Stranger, the silent protagonist and friend of Atrus, the brilliant Age-writer. Atrus and his wife, Catherine, have found a new home in the peaceful Age of Tomahna, where they are raising their young daughter, Yeesha.

The central conflict is initiated by Saavedro, a new antagonist. Saavedro is a troubled man, driven by two decades of solitude and an intense desire for revenge. He was once a respected figure in the Age of Releeshahn, a utopian Age created by Atrus's father, Gehn, for his followers. When Gehn’s despotic rule led to Releeshahn's collapse and the tragic loss of Saavedro's family, he blamed Atrus for not acting sooner.

Saavedro’s Vengeance

The game starts with Saavedro attacking Atrus's home, Tomahna. He steals Atrus’s newly written Age, Releeshahn, an Age intended as a fresh start for the D'ni people. Saavedro’s plan is not merely to destroy the book, but to manipulate and ruin the Age in an act of petty, tragic vengeance against Atrus, forcing the Age’s inhabitants to suffer as he did.

The Stranger is tasked with chasing Saavedro across several diverse Ages linked from the stolen Releeshahn book, including:

  • J'nanin: A sprawling training Age with environmental puzzles.

  • Voltaic: A dark, metallic Age centered around harnessing powerful electrical forces.

  • Edanna: A lush, vibrant Age comprised entirely of an enormous, fantastical tree.

  • Amateria: An Age of mechanized, modular landscapes and magnetic forces.

Gameplay and Innovation

Myst III: Exile retained the series' core gameplay of non-linear puzzle solving, exploration, and deciphering journals to understand the lore and mechanics of each Age. The shift to a 360-degree panorama view greatly enhanced the sense of immersion, allowing players to feel more connected to the environments.

The game is praised for its challenging, yet logical puzzles, often requiring the player to manipulate the unique ecosystems or technological systems within each Age to progress. The story, delivered through full-motion video (FMV) sequences featuring actor Brad Dourif as the compelling and tragic Saavedro, is a key element, adding a profound emotional weight to the quest.

The ultimate goal is to catch Saavedro before he destroys the Releeshahn Age book, forcing the Stranger to make a final choice about how to deal with the tormented antagonist, securing the future of the D'ni people.
