Near-Mage

Near-Mage is a narrative-heavy point-and-click adventure game with subtle RPG elements, developed and published by Romanian indie studio Stuck In Attic. Released on May 27, 2025, for PC (Windows, macOS, Linux), the game immerses players in a vibrant, hand-painted world steeped in Eastern European folklore and the unique atmosphere of Transylvania.

Plot: A Magical Awakening

The story follows Ilinca "Illy" Vraja, an indecisive and witty young adult struggling to find direction after high school. Her life changes dramatically when she receives a mysterious invitation from her Great-Aunt Domnica in Romania. Upon arriving in the charming, real-world town of Sighișoara, Illy quickly discovers a hidden parallel world: Rakus, an alternate dimension where the supernatural is real and magic is studied.

In a twist that reveals her family's heritage, Illy learns she comes from a long line of witches and is invited to enroll in the Transylvanian Institute for Magick—a kind of Eastern European Hogwarts. Her journey begins as a "Near-Mage," a mage-in-training, as she navigates classes, new friendships with fellow students (including Vampyres and Strigoi), and a mounting mystery surrounding the theft of a powerful, artifact-tracking book from the Institute’s library.

Gameplay and Spell Crafting

Near-Mage is primarily a narrative adventure. While it uses the classic point-and-click interface, the focus is less on complex inventory puzzles and more on dialogue, exploration, and the magick system:

• Classes and Near-Spells: Illy attends classes covering six elemental "Near-Spells": Earth, Water, Wind, Fire, Soul, and Blood. Completing a class (usually by listening to a lecture and answering a quiz) unlocks that element for use.

• Spell Crafting: Spells are created by combining three Near-Spells (e.g., Water + Wind + Soul might craft a Snow spell). These crafted spells are then used to solve environmental challenges, progress quests, and interact with the game's over 80 beautifully rendered environments and its numerous fully-voiced characters.

• Narrative Focus: The game is driven by episodic quests and character interactions. Critics noted that the puzzles are often straightforward, with the true depth lying in the storytelling, world-building, and character development rather than mechanical challenge.

The visual style is one of the game's biggest draws: a vibrant, dark-fantasy aesthetic with hand-painted graphics and traditional, frame-by-frame animation that gives the world of Rakus an enchanting, lived-in feel. The game allows for character customization with various unlockable outfits and hairstyles, adding a personal touch to Illy's magical coming-of-age story.
