Nexomon: Extinction is a vibrant, 2D monster-catching RPG that serves as a direct sequel to the original Nexomon. Released by developer VEWO Interactive, the game successfully captures the nostalgic charm of classic monster-collecting games while incorporating modern quality-of-life improvements and a distinct narrative voice.

Story and Setting

The world of Nexomon: Extinction is on the brink of disaster. Powerful creatures known as Tyrant Nexomon are fighting for dominion over both humans and the common Nexomon. Players step into the role of a fresh-faced Tamer, an orphan who joins the esteemed Tamer's Guild. Their grand quest is to venture across a colorful and mostly open world to find a way to stop the Tyrants and restore balance.

The story is generally well-received, adding twists and turns that elevate it above typical genre fare. However, what truly makes the writing shine is the constant companion, Coco, an anthropomorphic cat-boy who acts as a sarcastic narrator. Coco frequently breaks the fourth wall, pointing out common RPG tropes, making light of game mechanics, and offering humorous, often deadpan, commentary, which injects a unique personality into the adventure.

 Gameplay Mechanics

At its core, Extinction follows the familiar monster-catching formula:

• Collection: There are over 380 unique Nexomon belonging to nine elemental types, each with potential evolutions.

• Combat: Battles are turn-based, utilizing a system where each move drains a Nexomon's shared Stamina bar instead of having limited move uses (PP). Running out of Stamina forces a Nexomon to rest for a turn.

• Dynamic Difficulty: The game features a dynamic difficulty system where wild Nexomon and previously defeated Tamers will level up as the player progresses, providing a continuous challenge.

One notable departure is the catching mechanic, which is made more transparent and strategic. The player can view their catch probability based on factors like the wild Nexomon's low HP, status effects, the type of Nexotrap used, and whether the Nexomon has been fed its favorite food. A quick-time event mini-game can also be performed to further boost the catch chance.

Presentation and Reception

Visually, the game boasts a charming HD-GBA aesthetic, with beautiful 2D sprites, expressive character animations, and colorful battle backdrops. The soundtrack is also highlighted as a strong point, featuring both energetic and melancholy tracks that enhance the experience.

While many critics praise the game's challenging difficulty, deep catching system, and exceptional writing, some find the increased challenge, often leading to frequent trips back to the healing center, can occasionally disrupt the flow of the adventure. Despite some minor balancing issues and a lack of multiplayer, Nexomon: Extinction is generally regarded as a solid and captivating entry into the monster-catching genre, offering a refreshing and humorous alternative for fans.
