Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) serves as the thrilling, emotionally charged conclusion to the first trilogy of films centered on Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film immediately picks up after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where the world learns that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, thanks to the manipulation of Mysterio.

The Multiverse Breaks Loose

With his identity exposed, Peter’s life is completely upended. He, his girlfriend MJ, and his best friend Ned are targeted by negative publicity, which ultimately leads to their rejection from MIT. Desperate to restore normalcy, Peter seeks the help of Doctor Stephen Strange , asking him to cast a powerful spell that will make the entire world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.

However, Peter repeatedly interferes with the spell as Strange is casting it, attempting to exempt MJ, Ned, and Aunt May from the memory wipe. This interference causes the spell to fracture, tearing open the fabric of the multiverse and drawing in people from other realities who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man—specifically, his greatest foes from past film franchises.

A Quest for Redemption

Strange, realizing the danger, captures five of these villains: Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and The Lizard (Rhys Ifans). When Peter learns that each of these villains was pulled from their universe moments before their respective deaths at the hands of their Spider-Man, he argues against Strange's plan to simply send them back to their doom.

Inspired by Aunt May's moral compass, Peter locks Strange in the Mirror Dimension and takes the villains to Happy Hogan's apartment, determined to use his genius to "cure" them of the events that made them evil. This benevolent plan goes catastrophically wrong when the Green Goblin persona takes over Norman Osborn, leading to a brutal escape and the tragic death of Aunt May.

Three Spider-Men

Grief-stricken and consumed by a desire for revenge, Peter is ready to give up. However, Ned, accidentally using Strange’s Sling Ring, opens a portal and discovers two other versions of Spider-Man who were also pulled through the multiverse: Peter-Two (Tobey Maguire) and Peter-Three (Andrew Garfield). The two older, wiser Spider-Men find Tom Holland’s Peter, sharing their own similar losses (Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy) and offering him the guidance he needs.

Together, the three Spider-Men set up a final battle at the Statue of Liberty to cure the remaining villains. They succeed in neutralizing the threats, but the constant multiversal interference worsens, causing rifts to open and pulling in countless other characters who know of a Spider-Man.

The Final Sacrifice

Realizing the only way to save all realities is to let everyone forget Peter Parker ever existed, Tom Holland's Peter convinces Strange to cast the original, untainted spell. Strange reluctantly agrees. The final spell sends all multiversal guests—including the cured villains and the two alternate Spider-Men—back to their respective timelines and erases Peter Parker from the memory of everyone in the MCU, including MJ, Ned, and the Avengers.

The film ends on a deeply emotional note: a truly isolated Peter Parker, having lost his friends, his mentor figures, and his past life, now lives alone in a humble apartment, hand-sewing a classic Spider-Man suit. It is a true rebirth, positioning him as the classic, grounded, friendly neighborhood hero, finally making the ultimate, painful sacrifice to embrace the full weight of his responsibility.
