One Dreamer

One Dreamer is a narrative-driven adventure and puzzle game developed by the independent Australian studio F2House (led by Gareth Ffoulkes) and released in September 2022. The game offers a deeply personal and emotional look into the struggles of indie game development, burnout, and the effort required to pursue a lifelong creative passion.

The Narrative: A Life Divided

The story centers on Frank, a talented but burnt-out indie game developer. Five years after the successful launch of his passion project, a social VR MMO called PROXYlife, the game is failing, and Frank is struggling to pay a significant debt to his cloud service provider, LUX. His life is split into two distinct, challenging sections:

• Daytime Reality: Frank works a series of unfulfilling, soul-crushing freelance coding gigs for major studios to pay off his debts. These tasks often involve implementing ethically questionable mechanics, such as fixing bugs in corporate websites or programming loot boxes to have impossibly low drop rates.

• Nighttime Dreams: Frank seeks inspiration for his original, dream game, which he developed with his former colleague, Luna. In his lucid dream states, the lines between reality and imagination blur, and Frank is forced to confront the emotional baggage and failures of the past.

The story is a poignant exploration of creative integrity versus financial reality, resonant with anyone who has tried to balance a difficult job with a consuming passion.

Unique Gameplay: Coding Puzzles

One Dreamer uniquely integrates the abstract process of game development into its core gameplay by using coding puzzles:

• Pseudocode Mechanic: Players manipulate a simplified version of code, primarily based on the C# programming language. These puzzles are designed to be accessible even to players with no prior coding experience, starting with simple binary statements (e.g., changing a dog's existence from 'true' to 'false') and scaling up in complexity.

• Manipulating the World: The code is used to solve puzzles both in the waking world and in Frank's dream state. During the day, players fix bugs and implement features for Frank's clients. At night, code becomes a tool to literally manipulate the dream environment, changing the variables and properties of objects to produce the desired result and advance the narrative.

• Interactive Detailing: The game allows players to edit over 350 snippets of code, extending even to inconsequential objects like a toaster or a simple mini-game, which injects moments of humorous levity and reinforces the game's theme of programming as a tool for creation and change.
