Opus Magnum, released in 2017 by Zachtronics, is a celebrated open-ended puzzle game that focuses on machine design and programming. Building on the foundational mechanics of previous Zachtronics titles like SpaceChem and Infinifactory, Opus Magnum places the player in the role of an alchemist tasked with creating complex transmutation devices. It is a game less about finding the single correct answer and more about optimizing elegant, efficient, and beautiful solutions.

The Alchemical Task

The narrative follows Anataeus Vaya, a newly appointed Master Alchemist struggling to navigate the treacherous political and corporate world of the city-state of Salt. His job is to fulfill commissions from various factions, which involve transmuting base elements into sophisticated final products—from simple poisons and gold to complex life-saving elixirs.

Each puzzle presents the player with a set of starting reagents (base elements like Fire, Water, Salt, etc.) and a target product (the molecule). The player's goal is to design and build a self-operating, looping machine that correctly manipulates the inputs into the desired output configuration.

The Tools of Transmutation

The player constructs these machines on a hexagonal grid using a variety of specialized tools, known as alchemical apparatuses:

  • Arms: The primary manipulators. These come in various lengths (simple, piston, and bonded) and can rotate, extend, grab, and release atoms. The player programs each arm using a simple timeline, defining its exact action for every cycle of the machine's operation.

  • Glyphs: Hexagonal spaces that perform transmutation operations, such as:

    • Glyph of Projection: Moves an atom one space along its bond.

    • Glyph of Quintessence: Purifies the target product.

    • Glyph of Bonding/Unbonding: Creates or breaks connections between atoms.

  • Platforms and Disposal: Used to bring inputs onto the grid and remove the finished product.

Optimization and The Three Metrics

The game's genius lies in its open-ended nature. There are countless ways to solve any given puzzle, but success is judged on three competitive metrics, encouraging endless iteration and optimization:

  1. Cycles: Measures the total time taken for the machine to produce the required amount of product. Minimizing this requires clever parallel processing and fast mechanics.

  2. Cost: Measures the total expense of the apparatus used. Minimizing this requires using the fewest, cheapest arms and components.

  3. Area: Measures the physical space (hexes) the machine occupies. Minimizing this demands compact, tightly packed designs.

Players can choose to focus on one metric or aim for a balance, leading to machines that range from ridiculously complex, space-efficient gears to sleek, sprawling, and lightning-fast factories. The ability to export solutions as animated GIFs has turned Opus Magnum into a highly shareable and competitive game, celebrated for the mechanical elegance and visual satisfaction of its automated solutions.
