Peglin: The Pachinko Roguelite

Peglin, developed by Red Nexus Games, is a unique and highly addictive game that creatively fuses the mechanics of a roguelite deckbuilder (like Slay the Spire) with the physics-based gameplay of pachinko/Peggle. Released in 2022, the game casts the player as a small goblin (a Peglin) on a quest to retrieve their stolen gold from the clutches of menacing dragons.

 Gameplay: Pegs, Orbs, and Damage

The core of the game is its turn-based combat system, which is resolved entirely on a pachinko board:

  • Turn-Based Combat: Battles pit the player's Peglin against various fantasy foes that occupy the top of the screen. In a turn-based structure, the player launches an Orb (acting as a pachinko ball) onto a board full of pegs.

  • Damage Mechanism: Every peg the Orb strikes contributes to a damage meter. When the Orb finally lands at the bottom of the screen, the accumulated damage is dealt to the targeted enemy. Enemies then take their turn to attack the Peglin or advance closer.

  • Peg Types: The pegs themselves are not static and are crucial for strategy:

    • Standard Pegs: Simply disappear when struck and increase the damage count.

    • Critical Pegs (Orange): If struck first, they grant a critical hit multiplier, making all subsequent peg hits in that bounce deal massive bonus damage.

    • Refresh Pegs ('R'): Hitting this peg immediately restores all previously popped pegs on the board, allowing the player to sustain a long attack chain and build huge damage numbers.

Roguelite Progression

The overarching structure ensures that no two runs are the same, demanding constant adaptation:

  • The Orb Deck: Orbs act as the player's "deck" of attacks. Players start with basic Pebballs but acquire and upgrade specialized Orbs throughout the run. These Orbs have unique effects, such as the Icycle Orb (pierces enemies and the first peg hit) or the Refreshorb (automatically triggers a Refresh when hitting a certain number of pegs).

  • Relics: The roguelite power source comes from Relics, passive items collected after battles or random events. Relics offer permanent bonuses that can radically change a run's strategy—for instance, increasing damage for every piece of gold you carry, or adding additional projectiles to every shot.

  • Random Map: Players navigate through randomly generated maps (the Forest, the Castle, the Mines) with branching paths that lead to different encounters: battles (skull icon), treasure chests, shops, and random events. Even navigation involves a small pachinko shot to aim for the desired path exit.

Peglin successfully marries the satisfying, chaotic fun of pinball physics with the deep strategic planning and build synergy of a deckbuilding roguelite, offering a unique and highly compelling loop of luck, skill, and power acquisition.
