Phoenix Point

Phoenix Point is a turn-based tactical strategy game developed by Snapshot Games, led by Julian Gollop, the original designer of X-COM. The game is a spiritual successor to the classic X-COM formula, blending deep strategic management with challenging, squad-based combat, all set against a Lovecraftian apocalypse.

The Setting: The Pandoravirus

The game is set in 2046, several decades after the Earth was ravaged by the Pandoravirus. This alien pathogen, carried to Earth in melted polar ice, rapidly mutated and absorbed terrestrial DNA, transforming both marine life and humanity into grotesque, bio-engineered horrors known as the Pandorans. A mysterious, toxic Mist spreads across the globe, driving survivors into isolated havens and mutating all life it touches.

The player commands Phoenix Point, a clandestine, multinational organization founded before the collapse to serve as humanity’s last line of defense. The mission is to investigate the origins of the Pandoravirus, unite the surviving factions, and ultimately stop the threat from completely eradicating humanity.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

• Geoscape Strategy: The strategic layer involves managing Phoenix Point’s global operations. Players must use aircraft to explore the darkened world map (Geoscape), establish new bases, manage limited resources, research new technologies, and defend havens from attack.

• Turn-Based Tactical Combat: Combat is squad-based and takes place on diverse, destructible maps. Key features include:

  • Free Aim System: Unlike typical grid-based combat, Phoenix Point uses a partial free-aim system. Players manually aim at specific body parts of enemies. Targeting a Mutoid’s arm might disable its weapon, while targeting a head might inflict massive damage.

  • Mutation and Adaptation: The Pandorans are not static. They constantly evolve and mutate based on the player’s tactics and technology. If the player frequently uses snipers, enemies might evolve hardened head armor. If the player relies on close combat, enemies might grow thick leg armor. This forces the player to constantly adapt their strategy and technology.

• Faction Diplomacy: Humanity is not united. Three major ideological factions survive—the militaristic New Jericho, the technologically advanced Synedrion, and the religious, isolationist Disciples of Anu. Players must choose to ally, remain neutral, or even go to war with these factions. Alliances grant access to unique research and vehicles, but antagonistic actions can lead to conflict on the Geoscape.

• Class System: Soldiers are highly customizable across multiple class trees, including the standard Assault and Heavy, as well as unique dual-class options that allow for deep specialization.
