Rebel Cops is a spin-off title from the creators of the tactical strategy game This Is the Police. Developed by Weappy Studio and published by THQ Nordic in 2019, the game strips away the managerial aspects of its predecessor to focus purely on squad-based, turn-based tactical combat, offering a much darker, gritty, and non-lethal alternative to titles like XCOM.

The Setting: No More Good Cops

The game is set in the fictional town of Ripton, which has fallen under the complete control of the powerful and ruthless crime lord, Viktor Zuev. The local police force, intimidated and corrupted, is helpless. The player commands a small, defiant group of honest, "rebel" police officers who have gone rogue to fight Zuev’s empire outside the law.

The narrative is lean but effective, emphasizing that these officers are fighting a losing battle, often using minimal equipment and facing overwhelming odds. The game's grim atmosphere is underscored by the high stakes—losing an officer is often a permanent consequence.

Turn-Based, Non-Lethal Tactics

Rebel Cops is a purely tactical game played on detailed, isometric maps. The core challenge lies in the strict emphasis on non-lethal engagement and limited resources, which fundamentally alters the strategy from traditional tactical shooters.

  • Non-Lethal Focus: While the officers have firearms, the game heavily penalizes the use of lethal force through a Reputation system. Killing enemies, even criminals, drastically lowers the player's reputation, which in turn limits access to better equipment and upgrades. The goal is to use non-lethal takedowns, stun grenades, pepper spray, and arrests.

  • Cover and Line of Sight: Traditional turn-based mechanics are crucial. Players manage Action Points (AP) for movement, taking cover, and performing actions. Line of sight is paramount, as exposed officers are quickly overwhelmed by Zuev’s well-armed thugs.

  • Stealth and Recon: Given the resource constraints, stealth is often the most viable path. Players must use silent takedowns and observation skills to scout enemy patrols and avoid alerting large groups.

 Resource Management and Side Objectives

The game maintains a strong element of resource scarcity. Officers start with basic equipment, and new gear—like better vests, non-lethal shotguns, and improved stun weapons—is expensive and hard to acquire.

  • Reputation as Currency: Reputation, earned by completing missions cleanly and fulfilling side objectives, is effectively a second currency. High reputation unlocks bonus missions and better equipment, making the non-lethal objective not just a moral choice but a strategic necessity.

  • Civic Duties: Missions often include optional, high-risk side objectives, such as rescuing hostages, clearing civilian areas, or recovering stolen goods. Successfully completing these tasks without casualties is key to long-term success.

Rebel Cops is a challenging and tense tactical experience that forces players to slow down, plan meticulously, and appreciate the strategic depth found in restraint.
