Resident Evil Village (also known as Resident Evil 8) is the eighth main installment in the long-running survival horror franchise. Developed and published by Capcom, it was released on May 7, 2021, continuing the story of protagonist Ethan Winters from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game shifts the setting from the claustrophobic Louisiana estate to an expansive, snow-covered, gothic European village ruled by supernatural horrors.
Plot: A Desperate Search
The game begins three years after the events of RE7. Ethan Winters, his wife Mia, and their infant daughter, Rosemary, are living in an undisclosed European location under the protection of the BSAA. Their peace is shattered when Chris Redfield and his squad raid their home, seemingly assassinating Mia and abducting Ethan and Rose.
Ethan awakens near the titular village after his transport truck crashes. His desperate journey to find his kidnapped daughter leads him into a community overrun by ferocious, werewolf-like mutants called Lycans. He soon learns the village and its surrounding areas are controlled by a sinister, witch-like supreme leader, Mother Miranda, and her four monstrous "Lords," who hold the fragmented parts of his daughter in four separate flasks.
The Four Lords of the Village
Ethan is forced to confront each of the unique and terrifying Four Lords as he pieces together his daughter's whereabouts:
-
Lady Alcina Dimitrescu: The instantly iconic, nine-foot-tall vampire countess who pursues Ethan relentlessly through the halls of her baroque castle.
-
Donna Beneviento: A veiled puppeteer who controls the eerie, giant doll, Angie, and subjects Ethan to intense psychological horror within her mansion.
-
Salvatore Moreau: A grotesque, aquatic mutant who hides away in a secluded reservoir.
-
Karl Heisenberg: A genius engineer with power over electromagnetism who operates a mechanized factory filled with experimental Soldat enemies.
Throughout his quest, Ethan is aided by The Duke, a mysterious, portly merchant who serves as a permanent item shop, crafting hub, and transport provider.
Gameplay and Conclusion
Resident Evil Village maintains the first-person perspective and survival horror elements (scavenging, resource management) established in RE7. However, it incorporates a much greater emphasis on action and exploration, reminiscent of Resident Evil 4. Combat is more frequent, puzzles are plentiful, and the inventory system is structured like the attaché case from RE4.
In the game's shocking conclusion, it is revealed that the "Mia" killed at the start was Mother Miranda in disguise, and that Ethan himself has been dead since the events of RE7, reanimated and sustained by the mold (Megamycete). Ethan makes a final, heroic sacrifice to destroy the Megamycete and defeat Mother Miranda, ensuring Rose's survival and paving the way for the story to continue with his daughter in the Shadows of Rose DLC.
