Rise of the Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration brought Lara Croft's second installment in the rebooted trilogy to macOS, a challenging feat successfully executed by port specialist Feral Interactive. While initially released for consoles and Windows in 2015 and 2016, the definitive Mac version arrived much later, specifically on April 12, 2018, including all the bundled DLC content that was part of the "20 Year Celebration" edition.

The port, developed by Feral Interactive, was generally received as stunning and one of the best AAA Mac ports at the time. It utilized Apple's graphics technologies and delivered the full scope of the action-adventure title, allowing Mac users to experience Lara's journey to the lost city of Kitezh.

Key aspects of the Mac port include:

• Graphics and Fidelity: The port successfully maintained the high visual fidelity of the original PC release. Users noted that little was lost in the transition, especially when utilizing more powerful Mac hardware, sometimes achieving performance comparable to Boot Camp (Windows) setups.
• System Demands: Rise of the Tomb Raider is a demanding title.³ While the port is excellent, achieving high frame rates and the highest graphical settings often requires a high-end Mac.⁴ Machines with Apple Silicon (M-series chips) have shown excellent native performance in recent years, often hitting smooth framerates (30-60+ FPS) at high resolutions and settings. Older, non-supported Macs or those with weaker integrated Intel graphics often required lowering settings to achieve "Playable" (30-45 FPS) performance.
