Shardlight

Shardlight is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Wadjet Eye Games, released in 2016. Set in a desolate, post-apocalyptic world 20 years after a mysterious global catastrophe known as "The Event," the game offers a narrative-driven experience steeped in political intrigue, class warfare, and ethical dilemmas, all presented in a classic pixel-art style.

The World and The Disease

The game takes place in the ruins of a city ravaged by poverty, famine, and a deadly respiratory plague called "Green Lung." Society has fractured into two distinct classes:

1. The Aristocrats: A privileged elite who live safely behind fortified walls, hoarding resources and the vital cure for Green Lung.

2. The Uninfected: The poor majority living in the slums, surviving on scraps and perpetually fearful of the disease.

The only way for the working class to obtain the cure is by completing dangerous, often fatal, tasks for the ruling elite, earning them a lottery ticket for a vial of the medicine. These desperate tasks are known as "Reaper's Jobs."

The Quest of Amy Wellard

The protagonist is Amy Wellard, a young, resourceful woman who contracts Green Lung while performing a Reaper's Job. Knowing she is facing certain death, she accepts a final, desperate mission: to find a person named "Danton" and deliver a coded message.

This seemingly simple task plunges Amy into a deep conspiracy. She encounters three powerful factions vying for control of the city and the cure:

• The Government: The ruling military junta, led by the authoritarian Minister and his heavily armed guards.

• The Resistance: A secretive rebel group fighting to overthrow the Government and share the cure with everyone.

• The Church of the Dazzling Sun: A quasi-religious cult whose followers believe in a "Radiant King" who will save them from the plague.

As Amy pursues Danton, she discovers a potential truth about The Event and the cure itself that is far more shocking than the political corruption she initially uncovered.

Gameplay and Moral Choices

The gameplay features traditional point-and-click mechanics: inventory puzzles, dialogue trees, and logical challenges. However, the true strength of Shardlight lies in its moral complexity. Amy must constantly choose between the pragmatic, often ruthless demands of the factions and her own conscience. Her decisions determine which groups she allies with, who she betrays, and ultimately, which of the game's multiple endings she achieves.

The game is praised for its mature storytelling and its effective use of the post-apocalyptic setting to explore themes of hope, despair, and the price of survival in a world where humanity has been stripped down to its bare essentials.
