The Banner Saga 2

The Banner Saga 2 is the second installment in the critically acclaimed Viking-inspired tactical RPG trilogy, developed by Stoic and released in April 2016. It is a direct continuation of the first game, seamlessly importing the player's save file and all their choices, reinforcing the core themes of permanence and consequence in a world racing toward apocalypse.

The Broken Road to Arberrang

The narrative picks up immediately after the tragic conclusion of The Banner Saga 1. The caravan, now led by either Rook or Alette (depending on the player's choice in the first game), is still desperately fleeing the advancing tide of the Dredge and the encroaching Darkness. Their destination is Arberrang, the human capital and the only city rumored to still possess fortified walls capable of holding back the enemy.

The journey is characterized by relentless challenges to the player's leadership:

• Caravan Management: The "Oregon Trail"-style management returns, forcing the player to manage dwindling Supplies (food) and navigate the internal disputes of their large, unwieldy caravan of humans, Varl (giants), and now a new race.

• Split Narrative: The story is divided between the main caravan's survival journey and the tale of Bolverk, the brutal Varl leader of a mercenary group called The Ravens. Bolverk is hired by the enigmatic Valka (magic-wielder) Juno for a separate, crucial mission, putting his anti-heroic perspective and violent decisions against the protagonist's more humanitarian choices.

Combat Refinements and New Elements

While retaining the core turn-based tactical combat system, The Banner Saga 2 introduces several significant improvements to address the repetitiveness of its predecessor:

• New Race: The Horseborn: The caravan encounters and can recruit the Horseborn, a centaur-like race from the south. Horseborn characters bring entirely new classes and mechanics to the battlefield, excelling at massive mobility, high-damage strikes, and devastating trample attacks.

• Battlefield Variety: Battles are no longer simple "kill all enemies" affairs. New victory conditions are introduced, such as eliminating a single powerful enemy or surviving until an interactive object is destroyed or activated, adding tactical depth and narrative context to the fights.

• Talents and Specialization: Heroes can now reach higher levels and choose a Talent for each of their core attributes (Strength, Willpower, Armor, etc.). These talents allow for greater specialization, making each character feel more unique and giving players more control over their party's development.

• New Enemies and Obstacles: The introduction of new Dredge variants (like the invisible Skulkers) and other foes, along with destructible environmental objects (like barricades), makes positioning and strategy more dynamic and engaging.

The Banner Saga 2 is a powerful middle chapter that deepens the mythology, expands the world, and heightens the stakes, culminating in a dramatic cliffhanger that sets the stage for the trilogy's devastating finale.
