The Darkest Files is a narrative-driven historical investigation and courtroom game developed by Paintbucket Games (the studio behind Through the Darkest of Times). Set in West Germany in 1956, the game casts the player as Esther Katz, a young prosecutor in a post-WWII society that is actively trying to forget the atrocities of the Nazi regime.

The Story: A Fight Against Silence

The game is inspired by the real-life work of Attorney General Fritz Bauer, who established a special unit to bring former Nazi war criminals to justice. Esther joins this small, dedicated team to investigate two extensive murder cases—both based on true Nazi-era crimes—that society at large would prefer to keep buried.

The core challenge for Esther is not just solving cold cases but fighting against a political and social environment that is actively hostile to her mission. Her perpetrators are often respected citizens, evidence has been destroyed, and witnesses are silenced, ostracized, or simply unwilling to speak the truth. Core Gameplay Mechanics

• Document Investigation: The game is primarily an adventure and puzzle title. Players spend time in the prosecutor’s office, sifting through historical documents, police reports, photographs, and legal background material in a first-person perspective. These documents serve as the foundational evidence.

• Interrogation and "Mind's Eye": Interrogating witnesses and suspects is a central mechanic. As a witness recounts their version of events, the game transports Esther (and the player) into a visual, free-roaming reconstruction of the memory or crime scene. This "mind's eye" mechanic allows players to explore the environment, find contradictions, and uncover hidden clues that can be used to challenge the speaker's testimony.

• Case Reconstruction: Using all gathered evidence and contradictory testimonies, the player must piece together the definitive timeline of the crime on a Reconstruction Board. This requires logical deduction to form conclusions by linking three specific pieces of evidence.

• The Courtroom Trial: Once the case is built, the player must present their findings in court, similar to the Ace Attorney series. Esther must defend her theory against the defense's arguments by presenting the correct evidence and reconstruction steps at precise moments. The outcome of the trial—conviction, acquittal, or mistrial—depends on the player's thoroughness and ability to prove their assertions.

The game features a distinctive cell-shaded 3D graphic style inspired by 1950s pulp comics, giving it a unique noir aesthetic.
