The Planet Crafter: A Peaceful Terraforming Odyssey

The Planet Crafter, developed by Miju Games, is a first-person open-world survival crafting game with a central, non-violent goal: terraforming an entire hostile planet to render it habitable for humanity. Released from Early Access in April 2024, the game offers a unique twist on the survival genre by making the environment, rather than hostile creatures, the primary adversary.

 The Terraformation Index

The player begins as a convict sent by Sentinel Corp to a barren, oxygen-starved rock with only basic tools. The ultimate mission is to survive long enough to transform the planet's ecosystem, progressing through distinct phases marked by the Terraformation Index score.

Progress is gated by achieving milestones across four key environmental statistics:

• Heat: Generated by building Heaters to melt the planet's vast ice reserves.

• Pressure: Increased by building massive Drills to stabilize the planetary core and atmosphere.

• Oxygen: Produced by devices like Oxygen Generators and, later, Tree Spreaders that introduce plant life.

• Biomass: The final stage, involving the creation of moss, grass, insects, and eventually, animals and thick forests through Seed Spreaders and DNA manipulation.

As the index increases, the environment visibly changes: blue skies appear, dust storms give way to rain, lakes form from melted ice, and green moss begins to carpet the rock, providing a deeply satisfying sense of tangible progress.

Crafting and Progression

The core loop involves continuous resource gathering and base expansion:

1. Basic Survival: The early game is a tense struggle to manage the player's vital meters: Oxygen, Water, and Food. Oxygen is constantly depleted, forcing players to quickly craft basic shelters and oxygen tanks.

2. Resource Gathering: Players mine essential minerals like Cobalt, Iron, and Magnesium scattered across the map's initial desert landscape.

3. Building and Power: Resources are used to craft increasingly complex terraforming machines and advanced Power Generators (Solar Panels, Nuclear Reactors) to meet the growing energy demands. The game simplifies logistics by having all power and terraforming output apply globally across the map.

4. Exploration and Lore: Progress is accelerated by exploring vast, procedurally generated shipwrecks and ruins scattered across the planet. These provide rare materials, advanced blueprints, and pieces of text-based lore that slowly uncover the mystery of the planet and the player's true assignment.

The Planet Crafter is often described as a "chill" or "relaxed" survival experience due to its lack of combat. It appeals to players who enjoy the rewarding cycles of crafting, optimizing production, and witnessing grand environmental transformation, now supporting up to 10 players in seamless online co-op.
