The Stepfather is a 2009 American psychological horror film directed by Nelson McCormick and written by J.S. Cardone. It is a remake of the 1987 cult classic of the same name, which was loosely inspired by the crimes of real-life serial killer John List. The remake attempts to update the premise for a modern suburban audience, but largely received negative critical reception for lacking the tension and satirical depth of the original.
Plot and Premise
The film opens with a cold, unsettling sequence where a man, Grady Edwards, methodically slaughters his wife and three children in a suburban Utah house before calmly grooming himself—shaving his beard, dyeing his hair, and changing his contact lenses—to assume a completely new identity.
The focus then shifts to the new family he targets. Introducing himself as David Harris (played by Dylan Walsh), he quickly woos and becomes engaged to the recently divorced Susan Harding (Sela Ward). David presents himself as the ideal partner and father figure—charming, devoted to family unity, and overly concerned with domestic order.
The stability of his facade is immediately threatened by the return of Susan's skeptical teenage son, Michael Harding (Penn Badgley), from military school. Michael, observing numerous subtle contradictions in David's vague personal history, begins to investigate his soon-to-be stepfather.
The Conflict and Killer's MO
David Harris's motivation remains the same as in the original: he is a sociopath obsessed with creating the "perfect family." When any member of the family fails to live up to his impossible standards or, more critically, when they become suspicious of his true identity, he eliminates them and starts the cycle over.
As Michael and his girlfriend, Kelly (Amber Heard), dig deeper, David’s mask begins to slip, leading him to murder anyone who gets too close to the truth, including a nosey neighbor and Susan's ex-husband. The tension builds toward a brutal final confrontation where Michael fights to save his mother and siblings from the maniac who promised them a perfect life.
The film concludes with a familiar horror trope: David escapes before the police arrive and is shown adopting yet another new persona, "Chris Ames," and approaching a new, unsuspecting single mother, suggesting the murderous cycle will continue.
Reception and Style
The 2009 remake, despite having a strong cast, was criticized for its reliance on genre clichés and its PG-13 rating, which diluted the psychological intensity and visceral horror elements present in the R-rated 1987 version. Critics noted that while Dylan Walsh embodied the bland, everyman look necessary for the character, his performance lacked the terrifying, mercurial shifts shown by Terry O'Quinn in the original. Ultimately, the film was viewed as a generic and formulaic addition to the 2000s wave of horror remakes.
