Unpacking is a serene, pixel-art puzzle game developed by Witch Beam that transforms the mundane task of moving house into a surprisingly poignant and meditative experience. The game strips away traditional mechanics like time limits, scores, or dialogue, focusing entirely on the tactile, satisfying process of unpacking belongings and finding a proper home for them.
The game is structured as a chronological series of eight distinct moving periods, beginning in 1997 and spanning over two decades of the protagonist's life. Crucially, the player never sees or interacts directly with the protagonist. Instead, the entire story and character development are conveyed solely through the items they own and the spaces they inhabit.
Environmental Storytelling
The genius of Unpacking lies in its masterful use of environmental storytelling. With each new stage, the player opens boxes in a new room (a childhood bedroom, a college dorm, a shared apartment, and eventually a family home), revealing items that collectively tell the unseen character's life story:
-
Progression: Items carried from one move to the next—like a favorite stuffed animal or a well-worn sketchbook—show continuity and personal growth.
-
Relationships: Items that appear or disappear hint at relationships, breakups, and new beginnings. For example, moving into a shared apartment introduces duplicate items (two toothbrushes, two gaming consoles) that subtly inform the player about the character's new partner.
-
Hobbies and Identity: The presence of art supplies, gaming consoles, or specific collections reveals the protagonist's passions and career path over time.
The Puzzle of Placement
The core gameplay is simple: click a box to pull out an item, and click again to place it somewhere appropriate in the room. The challenge comes from the placement rules. Items must be placed on logical surfaces and in logical locations; for instance, a toothbrush belongs in a cup by the sink, not on a bookshelf. If an item is placed incorrectly, it will gently glow red, prompting the player to try another spot.
This process is highly tactile and calming. The satisfying sound effects of setting down a ceramic mug or clicking a game cartridge into a shelf enhance the relaxation. There is a deep, quiet pleasure in bringing order to chaos, slotting each item into its correct place, and organizing a new life in a new space.
Unpacking is a short, elegant, and deeply empathetic game that turns an everyday chore into a powerful reflection on memory, identity, and the possessions we carry with us throughout life.
