The story of Vasilisa the Beautiful and Baba Yaga is one of the most famous and enduring tales in Russian folklore, often compared to the Western story of Cinderella for its themes of a virtuous heroine triumphing over a cruel stepfamily. It is a profound narrative about obedience, inner goodness, and the mysterious power of maternal blessing.

The Compassionate Heroine

The story begins with Vasilisa, a young girl whose mother dies. Before her death, the mother gives Vasilisa a small, magical wooden doll and instructs her to feed it and share her troubles with it, promising that the doll will always help her. After her father remarries a wicked woman with two jealous daughters, Vasilisa is subjected to constant hard labor, hoping to diminish her beauty and spirit. However, the doll secretly performs the impossible tasks, ensuring Vasilisa remains as radiant and kind as ever.

The Terrifying Errand

One autumn, while Vasilisa’s father is away on business, the cruel stepmother extinguishes all the lights in the house, including the one vital candle. The stepmother then sends Vasilisa into the deep, dark forest to seek fire from their terrifying neighbor: Baba Yaga. The stepmother hopes the witch, who is known to eat people, will devour the girl.

Vasilisa bravely ventures into the forbidding woods, guided by her protective doll. On her journey, she observes three mysterious horsemen: a White Rider (Day), a Red Rider (Sun), and a Black Rider (Night). She eventually reaches Baba Yaga’s dwelling—a hut built on massive chicken legs, surrounded by a fence made of human bones topped with glowing skulls that serve as lanterns.

The Impossible Tasks

Baba Yaga, a fearsome witch who travels in a flying mortar and pestle, agrees to give Vasilisa fire, but only if the girl performs a series of impossible tasks. For three days, Vasilisa must clean the hut, sort immense piles of moldy corn kernels, and separate tiny poppy seeds from soil—tasks that no single human could complete.

Each night, distraught and exhausted, Vasilisa feeds her little doll. The doll comes alive and magically completes the work, protecting Vasilisa from the witch’s wrath. Baba Yaga, frustrated but impressed, eventually asks how Vasilisa achieves such perfection. Sensing danger, Vasilisa replies that she succeeds "through her mother's blessing." Enraged by the mention of blessing, which Baba Yaga despises, the witch throws Vasilisa out.

Light and Justice

Keeping her promise, Baba Yaga gives Vasilisa the fire in the form of a skull with burning eyes. When Vasilisa returns home, the skull’s fiery gaze transfixes and then incinerates her wicked stepmother and stepsisters until they are reduced to ashes. Vasilisa buries the cursed object and leaves the forest forever. She later uses her prodigious weaving and sewing skills to create a cloth so fine that it impresses the Tsar, who discovers Vasilisa's beauty and marries her, finally rewarding her goodness with happiness and peace.
