The game follows the complete life cycle of a wolf, structured as a series of Quests or "The WolfQuest Saga":

1. Dispersal and Survival: The player begins as a two-year-old wolf, recently dispersed from their birth pack. The initial challenge is to survive alone by hunting prey like elk, mule deer, and moose, all while navigating the dangers posed by rivals and predators like grizzly bears and cougars.

2. Finding a Mate and Forming a Pack: The player must communicate and engage in dynamic courtship interactions to find a suitable mate. Once a bond is formed, the wolves establish and scent-mark a territory, which must be constantly defended against rival wolf packs.

3. Raising Pups (Slough Creek): The core of the game involves the challenges of parenthood. The pair must find and secure a den, and then tirelessly feed, protect, and guide their litter of pups through the perils of Yellowstone. Threats come from all sides—coyotes, eagles, and even bears will attempt to prey on the young.

4. Nomadic Life and Succession: As the pups grow, the pack becomes nomadic, learning to hunt as a unit. The ultimate objective, in the expansive Saga mode, is to sustain the pack for generations. When the player-wolf eventually dies of old age, they can choose an heir from their offspring to continue the pack's legacy, creating a continuous family tree and story.

Ecological and Gameplay Features

Anniversary Edition drastically improves upon the original with enhanced 3D graphics, a vast, seamless map, and deep simulation features. The environment includes dynamic weather, day/night cycles, and seasonal changes that affect animal behavior, such as elk migrations and breeding cycles.

A key feature is the Scent View, which visually represents the wolf's world of smells, allowing players to track prey and detect rivals via colored scent particles that accurately model how smells travel on the wind.
