World’s End Club

World's End Club is a puzzle action-adventure game with strong visual novel elements, developed by Too Kyo Games and Grounding. It gained significant attention due to its creative team, which includes Danganronpa mastermind Kazutaka Kodaka and Zero Escape director Kotaro Uchikoshi. Initially released on Apple Arcade in 2020, the game offers a narrative that quickly pivots from a dark survival game into a grand, uplifting journey of friendship.

The Plot Twist: From Death Game to Road Trip

The story begins with the Go-Getters Club, a quirky group of 12 middle school students on a field trip in 1995. Following a mysterious meteor strike near Tokyo, they wake up in a bizarre, derelict underwater amusement park called World's End Land.

There, they are forced by a sadistic, floating robot named Pielope to participate in a "Game of Fate"—a life-or-death scenario where the children are pitted against each other. This opening sequence immediately establishes the tension and intrigue expected from the creators' previous work.

However, the game quickly changes course. The students manage to escape the park and discover that the entire world is seemingly empty of adults. The main plot transforms into a 1,200-kilometer cross-Japan pilgrimage as the children attempt to travel from the southern tip of the country back to their home in Tokyo, learning about the apocalypse, their own mysterious powers, and the nature of humanity along the way.

Gameplay: Blend of Genres

World's End Club is segmented into three distinct gameplay types:

1. Story: The primary visual novel segments where players read through extensive conversations and narrative exposition, driving the plot forward and exploring the characters' personalities and conflicts.

2. Act: These are 2D side-scrolling action-platformer sequences. In these levels, the player takes control of different members of the Go-Getters Club, each of whom has suddenly awakened a unique, supernatural power. For example, protagonist Reycho can throw objects, while another member can create a protective bubble shield or smash obstacles with a baseball bat. These powers are used to solve basic environmental puzzles and clear obstacles.

3. Camp: Short, optional interludes that allow the player to talk to the other members of the group, deepening the relationships and revealing more about their individual thoughts and motivations.

The narrative is structured around a branching timeline, featuring choice-driven plot points that can lead to different paths across Japan and ultimately determine the outcome of the adventure. The game's vibrant anime art style and focus on friendship make it a gentler, more optimistic take on the apocalyptic scenario than the creators' previous works.
